HongGuang Mini EV: The best-selling electric car in China and it costs less than $5,000

HongGuang Mini EV: The best-selling electric car in China and it costs less than $5,000
HongGuang Mini EV: The best-selling electric car in China and it costs less than $5,000

China has long been the market leader in electric vehicles. There are a huge number of their models, Tesla cars are very popular there. But do you know which car has torn everyone in this category? This one.

Yes, this Wuling HongGuang Mini EV is the best selling electric vehicle in China in 2021. To be more precise, in general for the last 16 months. More than 50,000 of these babies were sold in the country in December alone. If anything, this is only two times less than all new cars were sold in our country for the whole of 2021! In total, almost 400,000 units of these HongGuang Mini EVs were sold in China last year, and total sales exceeded half a million.

Why such popularity? Price. This thing starts at around $4,200 and that says it all. In addition, it also looks cool in its own way, and inside, of course, everything is as primitive as possible, but not at the level of these creepy electric cars from Aliexpress.

Technically, of course, everything is as simple as possible. 17 hp motor allows the car to drive at a speed of 100 km / h, the power reserve, depending on the battery, is declared at 120 or 170 km, but according to the NEDC cycle. The length here is only 2.9 m, and the machine weighs about 600 kg.

I was immediately interested in the security issue, but so far the issue has not been completely closed. On the one hand, there seems to be no airbags at all, and I also did not find official crash tests. But there is some rather serious one, where the car was confronted with some kind of Chinese craft under the G-Class. The latter was really bad, and the HongGuang Mini EV even seemed to survive at the standard 64 km / h. That is, there really are passive safety elements, and the frame holds the blow. True, both cars weigh about 500-600 kg, so in a collision with at least some average sedan or crossover, everything will be much worse.

In any case, as a phenomenon, HongGuang Mini EV is a very cool thing.
