Grimm Audio has unveiled the PA1, a new monoblock power amplifier that represents the Dutch manufacturer's latest effort to push the limits of traditional Class AB amplification. Designed for demanding high-end audio systems, the PA1 combines a fully balanced circuit architecture, exceptionally low distortion figures, and substantial power reserves in a surprisingly compact enclosure.

The company describes the PA1 as a product developed without compromise, focusing on one goal above all else: preserving the integrity of the music signal while maintaining the dynamic expression and emotional engagement that audiophiles expect from the finest amplifiers.

A Different Approach to Class AB Amplification

While Class D technology has gained significant popularity in recent years due to its efficiency and compact size, Grimm Audio remains convinced that there is still room for innovation within Class AB designs. According to the company's engineers, many amplifiers perform exceptionally well under static laboratory measurements but struggle with dynamic signal conditions that more closely resemble real music.

Delivering 150 watts into 8 ohms and 200 watts into 4 ohms, the PA1 is built to drive even demanding high-end loudspeakers with confidence.

The PA1 was therefore developed with particular attention paid to dynamic distortion behavior. Grimm Audio argues that this often-overlooked aspect of amplifier design can have a significant influence on perceived sound quality, especially during complex musical passages where large transient peaks and rapid signal changes occur simultaneously.

The result is intended to deliver the tonal richness and natural flow often associated with premium tube amplifiers while retaining the grip, speed, and reliability expected from a modern solid-state design.

Fully Balanced Circuit Topology

At the core of the PA1 is a fully balanced signal path from input to output. Balanced amplifier architectures help reduce common-mode noise, improve channel separation, and enhance immunity to external interference.

By maintaining symmetrical signal handling throughout the amplifier, Grimm Audio aims to achieve lower noise levels and greater transparency, allowing subtle details and microdynamics within recordings to emerge more clearly.

The design also contributes to the amplifier's impressive measured performance, with the manufacturer claiming a signal-to-noise ratio of 118 dB at its rated output of 150 watts into an 8-ohm load.

High Power From a Compact Chassis

Despite its relatively modest footprint, the PA1 offers substantial power reserves. The monoblock amplifier is rated at 150 watts into 8 ohms and increases to 200 watts into 4 ohms, providing sufficient current delivery for a wide variety of loudspeaker designs, including more demanding high-end models with complex impedance characteristics.

Grimm Audio focused heavily on reducing dynamic distortion, an often-overlooked factor that can affect realism and musical expression.

Because each amplifier chassis powers a single channel, users benefit from complete channel separation and dedicated power delivery. This monoblock configuration minimizes interaction between channels and can contribute to improved stereo imaging and overall system performance.

Grimm Audio states that the amplifier was engineered to maintain composure even under challenging loads, ensuring consistent performance across a broad range of loudspeakers.

Extremely Low Distortion Figures

One of the most impressive aspects of the PA1 is its published distortion specification. Total harmonic distortion is claimed to remain below 0.0001 percent at one watt into 8 ohms, a figure that places the amplifier among the most technically ambitious Class AB designs currently available.

Combined with the exceptionally high signal-to-noise ratio, these specifications suggest that the PA1 was designed not only for musical enjoyment but also with a strong emphasis on measurement excellence and engineering precision.

The compact chassis houses a powerful Class AB output stage and a low-noise linear power supply with automatic voltage switching.

Users can further optimize system matching through selectable gain settings of either 26 dB or 18 dB, allowing the amplifier to integrate more effectively with different preamplifiers and source components.

Linear Power Supply With Global Compatibility

Powering the amplifier is a linear power supply featuring automatic voltage switching. While switching power supplies have become increasingly common in modern audio equipment, many high-end manufacturers continue to favor linear designs due to their proven stability and low-noise characteristics.

The automatic voltage selection also makes the PA1 suitable for use in different international markets without requiring manual adjustment, simplifying installation for global customers.

With a claimed signal-to-noise ratio of 118 dB and distortion below 0.0001%, the PA1 aims to set a new standard for modern Class AB amplification.

Designed to Match Grimm's Reference Components

The amplifier's external design was created by industrial designer Michiel Uylings, who has previously been responsible for several of Grimm Audio's most recognizable products.

The chassis adopts a minimalist and understated appearance that aligns closely with the aesthetic established by the company's acclaimed digital components. Measuring 250 x 250 x 240 millimeters and weighing 15 kilograms, the PA1 manages to combine substantial build quality with a relatively compact footprint compared to many competing high-end monoblocks.

Availability

Grimm Audio will announce pricing and availability details for the PA1 at a later date. Each amplifier will be backed by a limited five-year manufacturer warranty.

With its combination of a fully balanced architecture, ultra-low distortion, powerful output stage, and meticulous engineering, the Grimm Audio PA1 appears poised to become a serious contender in the premium monoblock amplifier market.
