The Japanese company Onkyo presents the AV receiver TX-RZ740, the main differences from the previous model TX-RZ730 are: they eliminated one component input, reduced the number of optical inputs from 2 to 1, removed two pairs of acoustic terminals and added new IMAX Enhanced technology.

IMAX and DTS have decided to launch their own certification program for home theater system components and content called “IMAX Enhanced.” They relied on THX, which developed its certification back in 1995. Thus, the IMAX Enhanced license will allow users to select devices and content that “provide a new level of immersive picture and sound quality” at home. The companies are developing a special IMAX Mode for system components that will allow you to enjoy content “as the director intended.” IMAX itself promises to provide documentaries and films from Hollywood studios in remasters. A special version of the DTS:X codec will be responsible for the sound – it, according to the developers, will allow you to get “signature IMAX sound” at home.

In all other aspects, the TX-RZ740 receiver repeats its predecessor. The receiver is capable of receiving and processing all conceivable streams of digital and analogue audio content in the house, as well as providing sound to the entire apartment or cottage using built-in amplifiers. Even a brief description of the device’s capabilities causes shock: it’s as if various catalogs have been collected in a heap and sprinkled with science fiction literature. After which it is difficult to understand whether it is a cinema receiver with “streaming-multiroom” functionality or vice versa.

The 9.2-channel model of the Onkyo TX-RZ740 receiver is THX Certified Select, i.e. The sound quality of this AV receiver is comparable to the reference sound in a commercial cinema. “Works with Sonos” support is also announced, allowing the receiver to integrate into the Sonos wireless ecosystem using Wi-Fi and the Sonos Connect device. The design uses a high-current power transformer and large, high-capacity buffer capacitors, as well as DAA dynamic amplification technology, which delivers high instantaneous current and includes proprietary noise reduction technology. The result is excellent transient response, detailed sound and a wide frequency range. Such an AV receiver confidently controls even large three-way floorstanding speakers.

The model supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X in a 5.2.2/7.2-channel configuration, and by adding a stereo end, you can build a 7.2.2-channel system. The receiver can work with Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X to upmix conventional multi-channel formats to object-based 3D sound. The Onkyo TX-RZ740 uses state-of-the-art AK4458 DACs and VLSC technology to eliminate RF noise. The AccuEQ Advance multi-point metering system helps calibrate the speakers, which also minimizes the amount of standing waves in the room. AccuReflex technology ensures that speakers designed for Dolby Atmos are phase compatible with other speakers.

The device has Bluetooth modules, Wi-Fi (dual bands), supports AirPlay 2 and the Chromacast built in platform for wireless audio streaming, which allows you to use the device with the Google Assistant voice assistant. The DTS Play-Fi protocol is available for transmitting music through an application to the receiver, wireless speakers and other components, as well as FlareConnect technology, which wirelessly broadcasts music in high quality from any source to any room where there are appropriate speakers. At the same time, full multi-room control is provided through the Onkyo Controller application. The receiver has built-in support for online services Deezer, TIDAL, Spotify, TuneIn and Amazon Music. DSD (up to 5.6 MHz), FLAC, WAV, AIFF, ALAC up to 24 bit/192 kHz and Dolby TrueHD are played via local network and USB.

On the rear panel of the Onkyo TX-RZ740 there are six HDMI inputs with support for 4K (60 Hz), HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG (for TV broadcasts) and HDCP 2.2. There is an HDMI output with a return channel, as well as HDMI for the second zone. There is an 11.2-channel Pre Out, an MM phono input, an Ethernet port, coaxial and optical inputs. You can connect the speakers using 9 pairs of screw terminals.
