Premiera A2: Well-balanced integrated amplifier

Premiera A2

We are further delving into the Premiera amplifier series. Up next is the Premiera A2 integrated amplifier, which features prominent backlit arrow indicators as its standout element. However, the appeal extends beyond these indicators; this model harmoniously blends hi-fi tradition with functionality and modern components.

We shared initial details regarding the new Premiera A2 integrated amplifier approximately a month ago, and we are now preparing for its upcoming listening session. To reiterate, the brand is owned by the Russian company JSC MMS, which designs its products in a laboratory located in Moscow. The final manufacturing is carried out by well-established electronics producers in Korea, China, and Taiwan. This strategic approach enables the creation of equipment that boasts contemporary features and impressive sound quality, all at a competitive price point. Consequently, the manufacturer is able to market its new line as “Premium class, accessible to everyone.”

The price-to-quality ratio is undoubtedly our primary concern; however, the “A” series offers additional attributes that set it apart. It embodies the essential characteristics of the beloved hi-fi classic, which resonates deeply with seasoned audiophiles. Interestingly, this appeal is also capturing the attention of a younger demographic. Notably, the large pointer indicators display the maximum power delivered to the load. Given the logarithmic scale, they add a vibrant touch to the amplifier’s front panel, even at lower volume levels. Additionally, the brightness of the backlight can be adjusted using the remote control.

The second often overlooked feature of amplifiers from the golden age of audio is the inclusion of tone controls. Users can adjust bass and treble levels with central frequencies set at 100 Hz and 10,000 Hz, allowing for modifications within a range of ±10 dB. Additionally, these controls can be bypassed using the TONE DEFEAT button located on the front panel. Furthermore, the amplifier is equipped with a built-in phono preamplifier compatible with both MM and MC cartridges, which can be activated via a toggle switch on the rear panel. The nominal sensitivity for the PHONO input is 5 mV for MM and 0.5 mV for MC.

The Premiera A2 features two linear inputs, one of which, AUX, can be switched from RCA to XLR connections. It also includes a loop for recording with Tape In and Rec Out, along with two outputs: a linear output from the preamplifier section and a monophonic output for an active subwoofer. This model offers fewer digital inputs compared to the recently reviewed A1, as the focus here is primarily on the analog pathway, with digital inputs serving a secondary role.

The front panel is equipped with a USB Type A port for playing audio files from flash drives in formats such as MP3, MP4, WAV, AIFF, and FLAC, supporting resolutions up to 24 bit/48 kHz. Additionally, users can connect a TV to the amplifier via HDMI ARC, which includes a return channel. Lastly, the amplifier features a Bluetooth 5.0 module. Input selection can be made using touch buttons with LED indicators or via the remote control.
