More than twenty years ago, the British company Musical Fidelity launched its first turntable, the M1, a notably forward-thinking move as the vinyl revival was just starting to emerge. The M1, designed by founder Antony Michaelson in collaboration with Heinz Lichtenegger of the Austrian firm Pro-Ject, featured a visually appealing design. Now, Musical Fidelity is building on that early achievement with the introduction of the Musical Fidelity M6xTT, which enhances the groundwork established by its larger predecessor, the M8xTT, unveiled only a year earlier.
The Musical Fidelity M6xTT turntable features a belt drive mechanism with electronic speed control, accommodating both 33.33 and 45 rpm playback. Its aluminum platter, weighing 6.6 kg and measuring 39 mm in thickness, provides a “flywheel” effect that significantly improves speed stability. To further mitigate record resonance, a leather mat is utilized on the platter. The turntable is built on a sturdy acrylic base that effectively reduces vibrations and is supported by specialized vibration-isolating feet. An inverted main bearing with a ceramic ball tip ensures smooth performance. The overall dimensions of the turntable are 480 x 210 x 370 mm, with a total weight of 19.1 kg.
The Musical Fidelity M6xTT turntable is equipped with a 9-inch tonearm that has an effective mass of 13g, allowing compatibility with a variety of medium-to-low compliance moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) cartridges. Since cartridge choice is a matter of personal preference, the turntable is offered without a cartridge. The tonearm’s design is inspired by the more advanced M8xTT model, featuring a shorter aluminum arm tube. Additionally, it includes a clear acrylic support ring and provides options for damped counterweights.
The Musical Fidelity M6xTT turntable is set to launch later this year or in early 2025, with a recommended retail price of €4,999.
