AromaJoin has introduced the Aroma Speaker 60, capable of transmitting odors at a distance of up to two meters. The device was announced at CES 2024.
The Japanese company does not say exactly how the technology works, fearing for the uniqueness of the development. Representatives of the manufacturer noted that the column consists of five modules, each of which contains six cartridges “with basic aromas” based on essential oils. Using them, a system of two columns recreates up to 60 different smells – pleasant and not.

According to Yanko Design journalists, some scents turned out to be too strong, while others accurately conveyed real smells. “When a green field appeared on the laptop display, the speaker recreated the smell of the earth after rain,” the authors of the publication shared. “When the scene switched to a city in smog, we could smell the smoke.”
The sound characteristics of the system are not disclosed. Visitors who listened to the new product noted the overall high quality of the sound, but did not provide any other details.
The Japanese company notes that the Aroma Speaker 60 is unlikely to reach mass production: the manufacturer views the exhibition as a platform for demonstrating the technology. AromaJoin hopes that what they see at the event will encourage other companies to create a shared ecosystem. To do this, the developers created an open source companion application and SDK that allows you to add flavor profiles to video content.
If other developers and companies show sufficient interest in the new product, and AromaJoin recruits a pool of partners, the company promises to begin mass production and open sales of Aroma Speaker 60. Until then, the Japanese manufacturer will produce speakers to order.
