Quad ESL 2812X & 2912X: Impressive Electrostatic Speakers

Quad ESL 2812X & 2912X Electrostatic Speakers: Sixth-Gen Upgrades to Iconic Full-Range Design
Quad ESL 2812X & 2912X Electrostatic Speakers: Sixth-Gen Upgrades to Iconic Full-Range Design

Quad has introduced the sixth generation of its acclaimed full-range electrostatic loudspeakers. These latest models continue the legacy that started with the original ESL in 1957 and signify a careful refinement of the previous ESL 2812 and ESL 2912, which debuted in 2012. The new versions boast considerable technical enhancements, yet the core design stays largely unchanged.

Like their predecessors, the new Quad ESL 2812X and Quad ESL 2912X are full-range electrostatic loudspeakers. These loudspeakers do not use dynamic drivers consisting of a cone driven by a coil/magnet system. Quad’s electrostatics feature a thin Mylar film diaphragm suspended between two stators in an electrostatic field. The diaphragm’s low mass allows it to react quickly to musical signals, aiming to reduce distortion and enhance detail.

The ESL 2812X and the larger ESL 2912X don’t feature multiple dynamic drivers, but instead refine the single-driver electrostatic concept through improvements in component performance and manufacturing processes. This also requires a crossover filter that splits frequency bands across the different drivers.

Since the ESL 63, QUAD’s electrostatic loudspeakers have used a concentric ring electrode arrangement. This configuration creates a point-source radiation pattern that enhances stereo imaging. A delay line sends the signal in time-delayed steps to the outer rings of the panel, contributing to the speaker’s spatial presentation.

The development of the ESL 2812X and ESL 2912X began with a complete overhaul of the ESL manufacturing process. Under the leadership of Paul McConville, changes were implemented to improve the precision of panel assembly, including adjustments to the membrane spraying, etching, and tensioning process. These updates focused on consistency and repeatability during production.

A notable change in the new models is the redesign of the internal electronics. Instead of a single circuit board, the Quad ESL 2812X and QUAD ESL 2912X now use three separate modules for high-voltage multiplication, control and protection, and low-voltage signal processing. This separation reduces circuit interaction and is intended to improve overall stability and reduce noise.

The audio transformers in both models are newly designed and manufactured in the UK under the supervision of Quad’s service team. These components play a key role in driving the electrostatic panels and have been updated to improve mid- and high-frequency performance and maintain wide bandwidth and linearity at high output levels.

The ESL 2812X and ESL 2912X have been updated with a new matte black finish, replacing the wood finish of previous models. A new grille cloth completes the look, while an optional underside LED light can be dimmed or switched off. The visual changes are designed to help the speakers fit better into modern interiors.

The Quad ESL 2812X stands 107 centimeters tall and has four electrostatic panels, making it suitable for medium-sized rooms. Its stated frequency response is 37 Hz to 21 kHz (at –6 dB level). It weighs 35 kilograms. The Quad ESL 2912X stands 147 centimeters tall with six panels and is designed for use in larger listening rooms. Its stated frequency response is 32 Hz to 21 kHz (at –6 dB level) and it weighs 44 kilograms. Both models share the same composite aluminum and steel construction and a dipole configuration with a fixed three-degree tilt.
