Bowers & Wilkins has launched an updated version of its renowned compact audio system – the Zeppelin Pro Edition. This latest model builds upon the legacy of the Zeppelin series, which has been a benchmark in the all-in-one audio system market since its introduction in 2007, appealing to discerning enthusiasts of premium brands. For years, the company has expanded its offerings, originally popularized by the iconic loudspeakers designed by Laurence Dickie, to reach a broader audience.

The Zeppelin Pro Edition maintains the signature airship-inspired design that defines the entire series. Nevertheless, the designers have added new sophisticated color options for the streaming speaker—Solar Gold and Space Grey—enhancing the current color range. Additionally, the ambient backlight has been refined to align more harmoniously with the overall aesthetic. However, the most significant updates are found beneath the surface of the covering net.

Zeppelin Pro Edition promises a shift in sound

The Zeppelin Pro Edition introduces several notable advancements in acoustic engineering, enabling it to achieve a frequency range of 35 Hz to 24 kHz. With dimensions of 650 x 210 x 194 mm and a weight of 6.6 kg, it delivers commendable performance. The tweeter positions feature new 25 mm titanium dome units, which are also found in the B&W 600 Series of premium loudspeakers. Their strategic placement at the edges of the enclosure, along with effective vibration isolation, ensures accurate and detailed high-frequency reproduction. Consequently, even with their close proximity, listeners can expect a fundamental representation of the recording space.

The midrange drivers, measuring 90mm in diameter, incorporate an enhanced version of Fixed Suspension Transducer (FST) technology. The advancements in diaphragm damping are designed to deliver a clearer and more transparent midrange sound. A 150mm driver located at the center of the speaker system establishes the bass foundation, ensuring that its vibrations remain contained and do not interfere with the performance of the other frequency ranges.

New DSP and expanded connectivity.

The entire acoustic system is managed by a newly redesigned digital signal processor (DSP). Bowers & Wilkins asserts that the updated algorithm enhances the interaction among the individual drivers, promising a sound experience that is “even more transparent and spatial.” This assertion will undoubtedly undergo rigorous evaluation in independent reviews. However, it is quite likely that the speaker system will deliver ample power, supported by a 240W amplifier.

Regarding connectivity, the Zeppelin Pro Edition provides a comprehensive array of contemporary features. It supports a multi-room setup through AirPlay 2, is compatible with the Bowers & Wilkins Formation multi-room ecosystem, and includes Bluetooth 5.0 technology with aptX Adaptive support, as well as Spotify Connect. Additionally, users can utilize the Bowers & Wilkins Music application, which facilitates streaming from popular services like Deezer, Qobuz, and Tidal.

Price and availability

Zeppelin Pro Edition launches at a price of $799, positioning it alongside direct competitors like Naim, Linn, and Devialet. Comprehensive testing and extensive user feedback will determine if the Zeppelin Pro Edition can uphold the five-star rating achieved by its predecessors.
