Sony launches a simpler version of the UBP-X700 UHD Blu-ray player

Sony has launched a new and simplified version of its UHD Blu-ray player UBP-X700, which now has the suffix /K in its name. This model has lost several networking and streaming features, which sets it apart from the original.

After major players like Samsung, Oppo and recently LG have pulled out of the Blu-ray market, Sony is one of the few manufacturers still focusing on physical media. The UBP-X700/K is the first new UHD Blu-ray player from the company since 2019, but it differs from its predecessor by omitting a number of features. It no longer supports the Video & TV SideView app, has no network connection for streaming and lacks apps for services like Netflix and YouTube. Support for Spotify Connect has also been removed, and the option for screen mirroring is gone.

Despite these changes, the player still has an Ethernet RJ45 port, although it is uncertain whether it actually has Wi-Fi support. It is still equipped with two HDMI outputs, one of which is dedicated to audio. In terms of image quality, it supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision for high dynamic range, as well as the modern audio formats Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. It can play both UHD Blu-ray discs, regular Blu-ray discs and DVDs, making it a relevant choice for those who still prefer physical formats.
