The Japanese company Rotel, with a history spanning around sixty years, has introduced its inaugural headphone amplifier, named the DX-3. This model features both digital and analog inputs, along with Bluetooth connectivity. The front panel is equipped with a standard 6.35 mm jack, as well as a 4.4 mm jack for balanced connections.

Aside from a wired connection, wireless headphones can also be used, thanks to the on-board Bluetooth connectivity, with support for AAC and the higher-end aptX HD codecs. In the center of the front panel is a color information screen that shows the source and selected volume. The large knurled volume knob offers volume control in 0.5 dB steps, assisted by an audiophile NJW1195A fully differential analog volume control. No, the DX-3 does not have streaming functions.
Digital music signal is processed by an ESS Sabre ES9028PRO eight-channel DAC chip that can handle Hi-Res audio files up to 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD256. The maximum resolution can be processed via the USB-B input only. The coaxial and optical inputs can handle resolutions up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
In addition to three digital inputs and Bluetooth connectivity, a stereo RCA line input is also available. The DX-3 can also be connected to a (power) amplifier or a set of active speakers. After all, it has volume control and a RCA output and XLR output.
The power supply is based on a custom toroidal transformer designed and manufactured in-house by Rotel. Analog and digital circuitry each have their own power supply line. Custom low-pass filters and a fully balanced signal path further help suppress unwanted noise and distortion. The DX-3 measures 3″ x 8.5″ x 9.75″ (7.6 x 21.5 x 24.7 cm) (H x W x D).

The Rotel DX-3 is expected to be available from the end of March in a silver and black version and will retail for just under 1,500 euros.
