French audio company Focal has introduced a new model of wireless over-ear headphones named Bathys MG. This latest version builds upon the original Bathys, featuring a diaphragm made from magnesium, which is reflected in the “MG” designation. Additionally, the headphones are equipped with upgraded microphones to enhance the performance of active noise cancellation (ANC), and improvements have been made to the Bluetooth connectivity.
The Bathys MG headphones utilize drivers with an M-shaped diaphragm crafted from magnesium, manufactured in France by Focal. The inclusion of new microphones enhances the active noise cancellation capabilities, allowing for improved voice isolation and effective management of ambient noise. Furthermore, the USB DAC mode supports high-resolution audio playback of up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
The latest over-ear headphones are positioned at the premium end of the wireless headphone market, showcasing a sophisticated design and aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from the Focal Clear MG, renowned as the standard for home hi-fi headphones, the stylish Chestnut finish is complemented by an illuminated logo that imparts a unique, contemporary touch. The incorporation of high-grade materials like aluminum and magnesium in the yoke ensures a perfect balance of lightweight construction and durability. Additionally, the genuine leather headband and ergonomic foam ear cushions provide exceptional comfort for prolonged, immersive listening sessions.
Focal claims a battery life of 30 hours in wireless mode, 35 hours when using the jack, and 42 hours in USB-DAC mode. The quick charge feature allows for five hours of extra listening time with just a 15-minute charge. The frequency response is specified by Focal as ranging from 10 Hz to 22 kHz (+/- 3 dB). The Bathys MG has a weight of 350 grams.
Bluetooth connectivity has been enhanced to version 5.2, facilitating seamless pairing with source devices. The designers assert that the Bathys MG exemplifies efficiency in all aspects. The Focal & Naim app simplifies operation, allowing users to customize sound preferences through predefined or personalized equalizer settings. It also enables adjustments based on the listening environment and provides noise cancellation options in Silent, Soft, or Transparent modes. Additionally, the app features a hearing test that tailors sound reproduction to suit each individual user.
The Focal Bathys includes a storage and transport case, along with a jack plug cable and a USB C cable, each measuring 1.2 meters in length. Shipping is anticipated to begin in May, and the price has not yet been disclosed.
