Denon AH-MM400: Full-size headphones with premium sound and a neutral tonal balance

Denon AH-MM400
Denon AH-MM400

The Denon AH-MM400 are full-size headphones that provide premium sound and a neutral tonal balance. The development and final configuration of the model at the company’s plant took place with the participation of professional musicians and sound engineers. And if in the previous model the designers for some reason covered the wooden cups with plastic “splashes”, here all the nobility of the texture of natural American walnut literally cries out to an audience greedy for nature. However, you won’t find anything reckless and “maniacal” in the appearance of the Denon AH-MM400. The design is thought out inside and out – it looks stylish, solid and expensive. The headband mechanism is made of aluminum. The “pillows” are leatherette, but they look chic. In general, the aesthetics of the Denon AH-MM400 headphones are associated with the interior design of prestigious, expensive cars.

The sturdy aluminum headband extends, folds and bends in all directions while providing a comfortable fit. When transporting (folded), the headphones take up minimal space. Cast aluminum cup holders are lightweight and highly reliable. “Inflated” toroidal ear pads are made of a special soft material with a “memory effect” – they provide a good fit, excellent sound insulation, but at the same time do not press. It seemed to us that the headphones did not fit too tightly around the head (they could fall off during energetic dancing), but the level of comfort was maximum. The kit includes two replaceable 1.3 m cables (regular and with a headset). The conductors in the cables are made of highly purified oxygen-free copper, and the contact surfaces are gold-plated. The plug is a 3.5 mm minijack, a 6.3 mm adapter is provided.

The developers set themselves the task of achieving an even, “honest” tonal balance, but at the same time not losing musicality. Therefore (according to legend) professional musicians and sound engineers took part in the final finishing process. The result is a sound that, in our opinion, is more addressed to sensual music lovers than to inquisitive audiophiles and sound engineers. The Denon AH-MM400 plays beautifully and cheerfully. Natural wood enclosures are definitely valuable for their acoustic properties. Thanks to special processing and additional damping, the cabinets do not resonate even at high sound volumes – the sound is both pure and noble.

The headphones are equipped with proprietary dynamic drivers of a fairly large diameter (to create a biting, dynamic sound) – 40 mm with a diaphragm made of composite material (paper + carbon fiber). The Free Edge suspension provides a wider frequency response (than traditional designs). Neodymium magnets are responsible for high sensitivity (96 dB) and efficiency. As a result, Denon AH-MM400 sound bright, rich and dense. The details are well defined, but not harsh – the sound seems surprisingly flexible and expressive. The balance, in general, pleases with its linearity. The scene is clearly visible. However, the overall presentation of the material tends to be “glossy” rather than completely neutral.
