Mullard 3-3: Classic Sounds lives up to its name with a new tube amplifier

Mullar Stereo 3-3

A British company specializing in the “reissues” of classic amplifiers from the 50s and 60s of the last century has introduced its inaugural power amplifier – the Mullard 3-3.

This stereo single-ended circuit is constructed based on the 60s model EL84 3.5W with EL84 output pentodes. The incorporation of direct communication between the preliminary and final stages is unconventional but is emphasized by the developers for providing good DC stability and a broad frequency range. This design is facilitated by the fact that the output transformer does not introduce phase shifts. The amplifier is equipped with a pair of EF86 and EL84 tubes, along with one EZ81.

The body is made of 2mm thick aluminum in a glossy black finish. All lamp sockets have gold-plated contacts. The output transformer has taps for connecting acoustics with impedances of 4, 8 and 16 Ohms.

The amplifier is sold fully assembled or as a kit of parts for self-assembly. At the start of sales, a ready-made device can be purchased in the UK for £685 – £720, a kit with all components for £690. After 1 March the price will increase by £130 and £115 respectively.

The company’s immediate plans include the release of a push-pull stereo amplifier Mullard 5 – 10 with an output power of 2 x 10 W.
