Edifier’s new MR5 studio monitors feature a three-way design with three amplifiers, Hi-Res Audio support, and Bluetooth LDAC. The manufacturer bills the MR5 as a significant upgrade over the previous MR4 model.
Edifier MR5
Edifier’s MR5 is a master/slave speaker system. One speaker is the master and contains all the onboard electronics, including the amplifiers for the passive slave, which is connected to the master by a cable. Each speaker features a 3.75-inch midrange driver and a 1-inch silk dome tweeter. Inside, a 5-inch woofer is housed. Each driver has its own Class D amplifier, i.e., 10 watts for the tweeter, 15 watts for the midrange, and 30 watts for the woofer. According to the manufacturer, this three-amplifier configuration results in cleaner crossover transitions and better frequency control across the entire spectrum. The specified frequency response ranges from 46 Hz to 40 kHz, with a maximum SPL (Sound Pressure Level) of 101 dB at one meter. Crossover occurs at 155 Hz and 2.6 kHz.
Unlike the MR4, which is a two-way system, the MR5 separates its midrange frequencies to prevent bass and treble overlap. Combined with the larger driver size and higher total power output (55 watts RMS per channel), the MR5 should be an excellent choice for a higher-end option in home studios or nearfield listening setups requiring more headroom and clarity.
Connectivity has also been upgraded. Balanced XLR/TRS inputs, RCA, 3.5mm jack, Bluetooth 6.0 with LDAC, and even a headphone output make the MR5 suitable for a variety of setups. The built-in tuning controls are complemented by EQ adjustments via Edifier’s ConneX app, allowing users to tailor the sound to different rooms or mixes. The product is Hi-Res Audio certified and supports up to 24-bit/96 kHz playback. Despite their relatively compact design, the two speakers weigh just over 10 kilograms together.
The MR5 is available in black and white.
