Magnetar has introduced the Ultima, a flagship universal media transport designed for high-end home cinema and audio systems. The new model supports an extensive range of optical discs and digital media while separating power delivery from the main transport chassis.
A universal source for physical and digital media
The Ultima is intended to serve as a single source component for systems that combine movie playback, multichannel audio and dedicated music listening. It builds on Magnetar’s MKII platform and draws on more than two decades of the company’s engineering experience.
Its optical disc compatibility covers UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, CD, SACD and DVD-Audio. The transport also supports high-resolution playback from USB storage and network sources, alongside DSD and DoP transmission over AES/EBU. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are included for compatible video content and displays.
This broad format coverage positions the Ultima as an alternative to installing separate players for different disc types and file-based sources. Magnetar describes it as a pure transport, with its primary role being to preserve source data on the way to an external processor, DAC or display rather than acting as a conventional all-in-one player.
Separate power architecture with lithium-based modules
A dedicated external power unit is one of the Ultima’s defining design features. Magnetar says its DC power architecture uses BYD lithium-based modules to isolate critical transport, clock and signal paths from noise, voltage fluctuations and other disturbances associated with conventional power environments.
The arrangement is designed to provide a stable, low-noise operating environment for the transport’s most sensitive sections. By treating power delivery as a separate engineering priority, Magnetar aims to limit electrical interactions that could affect data transfer and timing throughout the player.
Unified 10 MHz master clocking
The power system is complemented by a synchronized master-clock architecture based on a unified 10 MHz reference. According to Magnetar, this allows the player’s subsystems to operate from a common timing reference while maintaining predictable data flow to downstream equipment.
The company says this approach is intended to improve timing consistency, overall system stability and signal integrity while reducing total phase noise. It also identifies more consistent CD playback as a particular benefit of the clock implementation.
External processors and digital-to-analog converters remain central to the Ultima’s intended use. The transport has been engineered to pass signals onward with stable timing, making it suitable for systems in which decoding and conversion are handled by specialized components.
Reinforced construction and isolated circuitry
Mechanical engineering receives similar attention. The Ultima uses a heavily reinforced chassis intended to reduce vibration, suppress resonance and maintain stability while discs are spinning. The disc mechanism itself has also been refined with an emphasis on reading stability, vibration control and data integrity.
Internally isolated components help shield sensitive circuitry from interference. Magnetar also says that grounding and power distribution are carefully controlled to reduce unwanted electrical interaction between the transport’s subsystems.
Together, these measures reflect the Ultima’s positioning as a purpose-built reference source rather than a mainstream universal player. Its combination of physical-media support and network or USB playback is aimed at installations that maintain both disc collections and locally stored digital libraries.
CEDIA Expo appearance and availability
Magnetar plans to demonstrate the Ultima at CEDIA Expo 2026 in booth 4103. The appearance will give custom-installation and home-cinema professionals an opportunity to see the company’s new flagship transport in person.
Pricing and delivery details for the Benelux region have not yet been announced. No USD price was provided.
