McIntosh MX123: AV processor perfect for home theater enthusiasts

McIntosh MX123
McIntosh MX123

The McIntosh MX123 A/V processor combines McIntosh’s long tradition of uncompromising sound quality with the latest in home theater technology. It is compatible with all leading surround sound formats, including Dolby® Atmos, DTS:X™ and Auro-3D®. It’s also fully compatible with today’s 4K Ultra HD video sources, and is also capable of upscaling to 4K Ultra HD.

The McIntosh MX123 features enhanced digital audio processing capabilities resulting in 2 more discrete audio channels, resulting in the MX123 having 13.2 discrete audio channels compared to the previous model’s 11.2 channels. These 13.2 discrete channels are available through both balanced and unbalanced audio outputs, which can be used in a variety of home theater speaker configurations. A pair of additional unbalanced outputs provide additional connection flexibility. DSD and ALAC playback support has been doubled to DSD128 and ALAC 192 kHz.

The video part of the McIntosh MX123 has 7 HDMI inputs and 3 HDMI outputs. All HDMI inputs and outputs support HDCP 2.3, making the MX123 future-proof for digital content protection specifications. All HDMI inputs and outputs have 18 Gbps bandwidth to support Dolby Vision™, HDR10 and HLG high dynamic range (HDR) formats; 4K Ultra HD at 50/60 Hz; color spacing 4:4:4; and end-to-end 3D video. Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) features are included in one of the HDMI outputs. The more advanced eARC offers improved bandwidth, allowing the McIntosh MX123 to receive higher-resolution audio from your TV. Additional switching options include: 4 digital audio inputs; 1 balanced and 8 unbalanced analog stereo inputs (including 1 MM phono stage input); unbalanced 7.1 multi-channel audio input; 3 component and 4 composite video inputs; 1 USB Type A input; 2 unbalanced analog stereo outputs; 2 composite and 1 component video outputs.

An exciting new feature on the McIntosh MX123 is IMAX® Enhanced. IMAX Enhanced is a set of rigorous performance standards set by IMAX and DTS® to create a higher bar for picture and sound quality on premium devices. It uses a sophisticated, advanced algorithm designed to produce high-quality and clear 4K HDR images.

Streaming options on the McIntosh MX123 have also been improved over the previous model. MX123 now includes Apple® AirPlay 2® along with Bluetooth® and Spotify Connect for easy streaming from mobile devices. AirPlay 2 is Apple technology designed to control home audio systems and speakers in any room—with one touch or by simply asking Siri—right from your iPhone®, iPad®, HomePod™ or Apple TV®. It offers multi-room audio, Siri voice control and enhanced playback. There’s also TuneIn for additional music streaming options. To improve streaming performance and reliability, wireless connectivity has been improved with support for 2.4/5GHz dual-band networking.

The McIntosh MX123 includes Audyssey MultEQ® XT32, which calibrates the MX123 to the unique acoustic properties of a home theater, allowing it to produce the clearest, most balanced sound possible. Each discrete audio channel has its own 32-bit high-quality digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to provide the best audio quality. Bass and treble controls and a 9-band equalizer provide additional fine-tuning. The McIntosh MX123 also has the ability to create 2 additional zones and send selected audio and/or video signals to each zone. Front panel buttons or a universal remote control make it easy to operate the system.

McIntosh is excited for home theater enthusiasts to now achieve Connects with Control4 certification from Control4® with the introduction of Simple Device Discovery Protocol (SDDP). Control4 is a smart home platform. SDDP-enabled products are automatically discovered on the Control4 network for easy integration into smart home systems. This reduces the complexity of installing a smart home system, reduces configuration time and, ultimately, reduces costs during project implementation. All McIntosh MX123s will work with Control4 without the need to update the MX123 firmware. The installer simply needs to add the MX123 to the Control4 system and the controller will recognize it. Then the correct driver will be automatically downloaded from Control4 and the MX123 will be installed on the system.
