Marantz SR7015: IMAX Enhanced 9.2-channel AV receiver

Marantz SR7015
Marantz SR7015

The Marantz SR7015 is a 9.2-channel AV receiver that complies with the IMAX Enhanced certificate, resulting in very high picture and sound quality (using a special version of the DTS codec), comparable to the picture/sound quality in IMAX cinemas. All current 3D audio formats are supported – DTS:X and Dolby Atmos up to 7.1.4-channel version (requires a stereo driver), Auro-3D and even the DTS Virtual:X codec, capable of providing three-dimensional immersive sound for multi-channel audio systems without ceiling speakers. The receiver supports 8K 60 Hz video, including 8K upscaling, with support for HDR options: HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Dynamic HDR, HLG and HDR10, there is support for 4K at 120 Hz, and in addition – Quick Frame Transport (QFT) technology and automatic low latency mode (ALLM).

The Marantz SR7015 features HDAM amplification modules and uses current feedback. The result is a wide frequency range, impressive slew rate, and excellent detail and dynamics. The receiver produces a power of 125 W per channel at 8 ohms, and to convert “digital” to “analog” it uses a 32-bit AK4458 DAC, so Hi-Res audio playback is available over a local home network and via USB, including .DSD 2.8/5.6 MHz.

The Audyssey MultEQ XT32 system is used to configure/calibrate the speakers. Other Audyssey technologies are also used: Dynamic EQ to optimize frequency response throughout the entire range, Dynamic Volume to smooth out the volume level (relevant when watching advertising), LFC (prevents bass from leaking into adjacent rooms) and Sub EQ HT to optimize the performance of the two subwoofers in the system.

The Marantz SR7015 AV receiver is equipped with 2-band Wi-FI, Bluetooth and supports AirPlay2. There is access to the HEOS ecosystem, allowing you to organize and manage a multi-room installation through one application, which makes it possible to transfer audio files from your local library and streaming services to the corresponding HEOS components without the use of cables. Online services Deezer, TuneIn, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Amazon Music, etc. are supported, and the model is controlled not only by the remote control, but also by a proprietary application, as well as the Amazon Alexa voice assistant.

As for switching, the Marantz SR7015 has eight HDMI inputs with support for 4K/120 Hz, HDCP 2.3, BT.2020 color space and HDR video (HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG). There are three HDMI outputs, incl. for an additional zone. One of the HDMI outputs works with an enhanced eARC return channel that supports object-based audio formats. The receiver is equipped with a phono stage for MM cartridges, has an 11.2-channel Pre Out (RCA) and a 7.1-channel input. You can highlight the presence of S/PDIF inputs and an RS-232C interface. The receiver supports modern automated control systems and has 11 pairs of labeled speaker terminals.

Thus, the Marantz SR7015 AV receiver will not become obsolete for a long time, as it is equipped with support for almost all existing audio/video standards and technologies, including the latest extended IMAX standard. However, how well does it perform and is it a step up from previous models in the range? Our review will help you figure it out.
