Nunchaku is an innovative portable headphone amplifier from iBasso that boasts a distinctive feature. It operates in a hybrid mode, integrating two output stages: a tube stage and a Class AB stage. This design delivers clear and balanced audio through both 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs. The tube output stage utilizes one Raytheon JAN6148 tube per channel, operating at 22.5V.
The Raytheon JAN6148 tubes are miniature pentodes recognized for their reliability and performance, commonly employed in high-reliability, low-power applications like headphone amplifiers and various electronic devices. The solid-state stage of the Nunchaku is built on operational amplifiers and incorporates Texas Instruments’ BUF634A buffers to enhance driving capabilities.

When selecting the “tube” option, the Nunchaku provides 2.3Vrms (low gain) and 4.5Vrms (high gain), while the “Class AB” setting yields 2.8Vrms (low gain) and 4.1Vrms (high gain). The output power is 2x525mW at 32Ω for the “tube” stage and 2x450mW at 32Ω for the “Class AB” stage, with all measurements taken from the 4.4mm output. The DAC utilized is a Cirrus Logic CS43198, which is a single-channel device. Additionally, the amplifier features an FPGA KDS oscillator and a JRC volume control.
