Stax SR-007S Headphones: 3rd-Gen Upgrade with SR-X9000 Tech

The SR-007S from Japan’s Stax combines its iconic shape with acoustic innovations. The design builds on a design that has been around since 1998 and continues to evolve with modern refinements in both mechanics and sound.

Stax SR-007S

The new SR-007S is the third generation. The original version was the SR-007, which was later renamed the SR-007A. The third generation retains the trademark round driver mounted in open earcups, but also features significant improvements, many of which are inspired by Stax’s current flagship, the SR-X9000.

Revamped internal components, including a newly developed diaphragm and solid electrode structure, form the core of the SR-007s. Stax engineers have reduced the diameter of the vent holes by 20% compared to previous models using a high-precision etching process. This change optimizes airflow and improves acoustic response, resulting in greater clarity and resolution without sacrificing the 007 series’ signature warmth and depth of tone.

The entire construction of the SR-007S benefits from what Stax calls an Anti-Resonance Structure (ARS). This is a claimed innovation carried over from the SR-X9000. It features a stainless steel arch for increased rigidity and reduced unwanted vibration. This, combined with a newly designed hinge mechanism, improves comfort and adjustability without the need for manual calibration. A rubber headrest ensures a secure, balanced fit on a wide range of head shapes, continuing the Stax approach to hassle-free ergonomics.

Attention has also been paid to the ear pads, which now feature a swivel mechanism for improved adjustability and comfort. The ear pads are covered in high-quality lambskin leather. This material was chosen not only for its softness, but also for its sonic properties. The leather helps to reduce internal reflections and improve acoustic absorption, while the redesigned inner cushion contributes to a more spacious and precise soundstage. The new ear pads, finished in Stax’s signature brown color, reinforce the blend of traditional aesthetics and modern audio engineering.

In a move that many users will welcome, STAX has introduced a detachable cable system for the SR-007S. This addition supports long-term maintenance and parts replacement, and opens the door for possible replacement and/or upgrade of the cable in the future. The standard cable is a 2.5-meter, low-capacitance, parallel six-core cable that maintains channel balance and signal integrity.

The stated frequency response is 6 Hz to 41 kHz, the impedance is 145 kOhms and the sensitivity is 101 dB. The drivers operate at a bias voltage of 580 Volts DC and the SR-007S weighs 430 grams, without cable. The ear pads are made of a mix of genuine lambskin where the ears make contact and high-quality leather elsewhere for durability and comfort.

The Stax SR-007S can be ordered from June 30, 2025.
