Pioneer A-40AE: Classic integrated stereo amplifier

Pioneer A-40AE
Pioneer A-40AE

The Pioneer A-40AE is a classic integrated stereo amplifier, and there are no wireless modules or built-in streamers. It is designed to work as part of a traditional stereo system. Secondly, during its development, engineers paid maximum attention to the most important aspects for sound quality and did everything possible in this price category to ensure that the device worked out every penny invested in it.

The Pioneer A-40AE has a built-in digital-to-analog converter, built on an excellent chip from Wolfson, supporting signals with a resolution of 24-bit and sampling rates up to 192 kHz. All windings of the power supply transformer, intended for different circuits – pre-amplifier, power amplifier and control unit – are maximally isolated from each other to eliminate mutual interference. The capacitors in the filter were specially developed by ELNA for Pioneer audio equipment, as evidenced by the inscription on each of them. An interesting detail – the manufacturer especially emphasizes that the internal space of the amplifier is organized in such a way as to get rid of parallel planes as much as possible. This helps prevent standing waves from forming inside the cabinet, and although such solutions are typically used in speaker systems, Pioneer engineers decided to extend them to electronic components.

The amplifier is made in a reliable metal case with an aluminum front panel on which all the necessary controls are located. All handles are made of aluminum and have a pleasant working action, and their location is well thought out for convenient and intuitive use of the amplifier. The amplifier chassis is designed in such a way as to eliminate any resonances, including the possibility of internal standing waves. In addition to the traditional Direct mode, in which the signal bypasses all additional processing circuits, it is also possible to feed the signal directly to the power amplifier section. This means that the device can become an excellent assistant in a home theater system!

The rear panel has a full set of line-level analog inputs, an analog output, and an input for connecting a turntable with a MM head. A special feature is the input for supplying an analog signal directly to a power amplifier. Two pairs of output terminals for connecting speaker systems, as well as digital inputs – optical and coaxial. Of course, there are also connectors for a 12-volt trigger.

You can connect two pairs of speaker systems to the amplifier, for example, if you want to provide sound for another room, or one pair of speakers using a Bi-wiring scheme. The Pioneer A-40AE also has a headphone output, which will allow you to comfortably listen to music at a later time. The amplifier is made using selected components, including custom ELNA capacitors. All circuits of the device have been optimized to reduce signal transmission paths, and the printed circuit boards of the final amplifiers are designed for increased output current.

The Pioneer A-40AE amplifier weighs a little over eight kilograms, and its power is 60 watts when operating at a load of 4 ohms and 30 watts when operating at a load of 8 ohms. Pioneer A-40AE is a good choice for those who are starting their journey into the world of high-quality sound. It is ready to build a variety of systems and plays quite well – so go for it!
