Cambridge Audio AXA25: The perfect amplifier for beginners

The Cambridge Audio AXA25 amplifier embodies the brand’s Sound First philosophy, focusing solely on sound quality without any extraneous features

Cambridge Audio AXA25

The Cambridge Audio AXA25 integrated amplifier builds upon the success of the Topaz AM5 model, offering enhanced output power and a broader array of input options. It maintains a straightforward circuit design with minimized audio signal transmission paths and includes all essential adjustments. The front panel, crafted from brushed aluminum, features tone controls for both low and high frequencies, a stereo balance control, an input selector, and a prominent volume control knob. Additionally, the AXA25 is equipped with a front-facing 3.5 mm mini-jack input, allowing for easy connection of portable players and smartphones.

The rear panel of the device features four additional inputs for connecting linear signal sources. One of these inputs, labeled MP3/Aux, serves as an alternative to the front input; when a connector is plugged into the front panel socket, this input becomes inactive. Additionally, the Cambridge Audio AXA25 includes an output for connecting a recording device and a USB port that provides 5V. There are also two pairs of large screw terminals available for connecting the speaker system.

The Cambridge Audio AXA25 amplifier embodies the brand’s Sound First philosophy, focusing solely on sound quality without any extraneous features. This attention to detail ensures that even the smallest elements influencing audio performance are meticulously considered. In contrast to many other amplifiers in its price range, the AXA25 boasts a fully metal chassis, which, along with enhanced damping, significantly enhances its anti-resonance and shielding properties.

The input count is ideal for the majority of users; however, adding more inputs may result in heightened background noise. The tone control unit enables accurate and seamless adjustments to the amplifier’s frequency response, with minimal impact on the mid-frequency range, allowing for substantial modifications to the tonal balance of various acoustic systems. Furthermore, when the controls are set to the neutral position, they do not influence the sound quality of the Cambridge Audio AXA25, eliminating the need for a separate switch.
