But beyond the specs, the QM9K represents a clear refinement of TCL’s Mini-LED formula — brighter, cleaner, and more controlled than ever.

Design

The QM9K adopts TCL’s new ZeroBorder design, shrinking the bezel to just 3.2 mm. The effect is immediately noticeable: the image fills nearly the entire front surface, giving the TV a sleek, modern presence that feels right at home in a high-end living room or dedicated home cinema.

The frame is milled from a single piece of aerospace-grade aluminum, finished in a subtle matte bronze and reinforced with a ceramic anodized coating. It feels solid and refined, while also addressing durability concerns seen on earlier generations.

Off-axis performance is excellent, with both color and brightness maintained perfectly.

Below the screen, TCL discreetly integrates mmWave and IR sensors, far-field microphones, and status indicators. The panel itself uses a lightly glossy finish with an effective anti-glare coating, making it well suited for bright rooms without sacrificing contrast.

A height-adjustable central stand allows enough clearance for most soundbars, and cable management is handled neatly through integrated clips and cutouts. Around the back, a textured checkerboard pattern adds a touch of visual interest without being distracting.

The updated remote control continues the premium theme, with a matte aluminum body, backlit buttons, and a comfortable angular shape that sits well in the hand.

The QM9K lives up to its reputation and perhaps even exceeds it.

Picture Quality

The QM9K uses a QD Mini-LED backlight combined with a CrystGlow WHVA panel, and it builds directly on the strengths of the QM8K. Straight out of the box, colors look more balanced than on previous TCL TVs, with far less of the warm red bias that earlier models sometimes exhibited.

Six picture modes are available for both SDR and HDR, including Filmmaker Mode, which delivers the most accurate image without calibration. Color errors are already below visible thresholds in this mode, making it an excellent choice for movies and series.

Brightness is where the QM9K truly flexes its muscles. Peak highlights reach extraordinary levels, easily surpassing most competing Mini-LED TVs. Even in more restrained picture modes, HDR content remains intensely bright while retaining detail in highlights and midtones.

HDR tone mapping is handled confidently. EOTF tracking is accurate, grayscale performance is clean, and highlights retain texture instead of blowing out. TCL’s new image-enhancement features add subtle sharpness and depth without making the picture look artificial.

This year, TCL has further narrowed the QM9K’s bezel to just 3.2 mm, a feature the company calls “ZeroBorder.”

Contrast, Local Dimming, and Black Performance

Despite its extreme brightness, the QM9K maintains excellent black levels. Contrast is outstanding for a WHVA panel, and the Mini-LED local dimming system does an impressive job controlling light even in difficult scenes.

Bright objects against dark backgrounds remain well defined, with minimal blooming. Transitions between dimming zones are smooth, and letterbox bars stay clean and stable during HDR playback. Minor flickering can occasionally be seen when bright objects move rapidly between zones, but it rarely distracts in real-world viewing.

Color Reproduction

Color performance is strong across both SDR and HDR. The QM9K delivers wide color coverage, producing rich yet controlled tones without oversaturation. Skin tones look natural, and vibrant scenes retain depth without appearing exaggerated.

Gamma is set to 2.2 by default, which works well in brighter environments. Switching to 2.4 in a dark room improves contrast and shadow detail further. Importantly, black levels remain stable even when the TV is pushed to very high brightness.

The mini-LED backlight delivers very deep blacks, even in complex scenes with very bright details.

Viewing Angles and Upscaling

Viewing angles are excellent. Colors and brightness hold up well even when viewed from the side, making the QM9K suitable for wide seating arrangements.

Upscaling performance continues TCL’s upward trend. Full HD and even lower-resolution content is upscaled cleanly, with good detail retention and minimal noise. Sports broadcasts and live TV look crisp, while older material benefits from improved clarity without excessive sharpening.

Motion and Gaming Performance

Motion handling is another strong point. Adjustable blur and judder reduction controls allow you to fine-tune motion without introducing the soap-opera effect. Fast action remains smooth and clear.

For gamers, the QM9K is fully loaded. The 144 Hz panel, VRR, ALLM, and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro deliver responsive, tear-free gameplay. Input lag is low enough to satisfy even competitive players, and fast camera movements remain sharp and artifact-free.

Dark game scenes benefit greatly from the TV’s strong contrast and precise local dimming, allowing highlights to pop without crushing shadow detail.

Smart TV and Google Gemini AI

The QM9K runs Google TV 14, and it’s the first TV to feature Google Gemini AI built directly into the system. Gemini enables fast voice search, AI-generated summaries, and contextual information displayed directly on screen without interrupting playback.

The TCL QM9K comes with Google TV version 14, which brings Google’s Gemini AI to TV for the first time.

Under the hood, a MediaTek Pentonic chipset keeps everything fast and responsive. The interface is smooth, apps load quickly, and the updated quick-settings menu makes it easier to adjust picture and sound on the fly.

Support for Chromecast, AirPlay 2, Alexa, and Apple HomeKit ensures seamless integration into most smart-home ecosystems.

Sound Quality

TCL partners with Bang & Olufsen for the QM9K’s built-in speaker system, and it’s a noticeable step up from older TCL TVs. Dialogue is clear, mids are well defined, and there’s enough presence to make casual viewing enjoyable.

That said, deep bass is limited, and the TV still benefits greatly from an external soundbar or audio system. Features like Dolby FlexConnect allow compatible wireless speakers to be placed freely around the room, with automatic calibration for balanced sound.

Connectivity

The QM9K offers a generous selection of ports, including multiple HDMI inputs with full support for high refresh rates, eARC for external audio systems, USB ports, Ethernet, optical audio output, and next-generation broadcast support.
