{"id":161964,"date":"2023-05-28T10:43:41","date_gmt":"2023-05-28T09:43:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.techweekmag.com\/?p=161964"},"modified":"2023-05-28T11:04:16","modified_gmt":"2023-05-28T10:04:16","slug":"leica-q3-unveiled-with-60-mp-8k-and-fast-autofocus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/photo\/leica-q3-unveiled-with-60-mp-8k-and-fast-autofocus\/","title":{"rendered":"Leica Q3 unveiled with 60 MP, 8K, and fast autofocus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Leica Camera AG\u00a0has introduced\u00a0the Q3\u00a0, the third generation of the &#8220;Q&#8221; series camera, which features a Summilux 28mm f\/1.7 ASPH prime lens and a 60-megapixel back-illuminated (BSI) sensor with phase detection autofocus.\u00a0The price is $5995.<\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-title\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Leica Q3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/110_techweek.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"457\" \/><br \/>\nLeica Q3<\/p>\n<p>The new Q3 is built around a 60-megapixel sensor that offers what Leica calls triple resolution technology, which allows you to shoot at 60, 36 or 18 megapixels, saving them in DNG RAW format.\u00a0At maximum resolution, the camera is excellent at capturing fine detail, Leica says, but at a slower pace.\u00a0To increase speed, photographers can lower the resolution and get more images but smaller files.<\/p>\n<div id=\"g1-fluid-wrapper-counter-1\" class=\"g1-fluid-wrapper \" style=\"width:662px;\" data-g1-fluid-width=\"662\" data-g1-fluid-height=\"372\">\n<div class=\"g1-fluid-wrapper-inner\" style=\"padding-bottom:56.19335347432%;\">\n\t       <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Leica Q3 - Unique. Just like you.\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/827278397?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"662\" height=\"372\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe>\n\t       <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Q3 brings back the Summilux 28mm f\/1.8 ASPH lens, and Leica is confident it won&#8217;t have any issues with the higher resolution.\u00a0It has a built-in macro mode for close-up shots from a minimum focusing distance of 17cm and is supported by a digital zoom function that allows photographers to frame up to focal lengths of 28, 35, 50, 75, and 90mm.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Leica Q3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/111_techweek.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"591\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The manufacturer notes the Q3&#8217;s autofocus improvements as &#8220;significant&#8221;, probably because it now includes phase sensors.\u00a0Like the Lumix S5II, the Q3 uses a hybrid autofocus system that uses contrast, depth of field (DFD) and phase detection along with subject detection to allow the camera to quickly and accurately find the subject.\u00a0Photographers will be able to view autofocus in action through a new 5.76 million-dot OLED viewfinder.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Leica Q3 received an inclined screen\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/112_techweek.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"920\" height=\"517\" \/><br \/>\nLeica Q3 received an inclined screen<\/p>\n<p>On the back of the camera is a new high-resolution, tiltable 3-inch touchscreen that will allow photographers to shoot from multiple angles.\u00a0The company assures that despite the addition of moving parts, the camera has retained its IP52 water and dust resistance certification.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Leica Q3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/113_techweek.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"531\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A slightly unexpected addition is that the Leica Q3 can also shoot video at up to 8K (4:2:0, Long-GOP) in both H.265 and Apple ProRes.\u00a0It can also shoot at lower resolutions, including 4K up to 60 fps (4:2:2, 10-bit, All-I).\u00a0It should be noted that the camera does not have a microphone port, so any video recorded with the Q3 has usage restrictions.\u00a0By the way, it is not very clear whether such a level of video recording is needed for a camera with fixed optics.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/114_techweek.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"920\" height=\"433\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The camera does not have internal memory like the M11 or M11 Monochrom, so all videos must be saved to a single SD card or sent via HDMI.\u00a0The USB-C port allows you to connect an external power source and shoot with Adobe Lightroom or Capture One.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Leica Q3 with optional Drop XL Wireless Charger\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/115_techweek.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"920\" height=\"464\" \/><br \/>\nLeica Q3 with optional Drop XL Wireless Charger<\/p>\n<p>The Q3 supports wireless charging using the new Leica charging pad or any other Qi-compatible devices.\u00a0However, the battery that powers the Q3 is different from previous models &#8211;
