{"id":160909,"date":"2023-04-28T11:55:46","date_gmt":"2023-04-28T10:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.techweekmag.com\/?p=160909"},"modified":"2023-04-28T11:56:22","modified_gmt":"2023-04-28T10:56:22","slug":"uk-blocks-xbox-buyout-of-activision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/gaming\/uk-blocks-xbox-buyout-of-activision\/","title":{"rendered":"UK blocks Xbox buyout of Activision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several headaches are taking Microsoft Xbox since the\u00a0announcement of the purchase of Activision\u00a0for no less than 69 billion dollars in January of last year.\u00a0Following its court fights with Playstation, the first setback comes from the\u00a0UK&#8217;s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)\u00a0announcing against the deal\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>Although many believed that after several months of litigation the deal would end up being approved by the main regulatory bodies,\u00a0the UK CMA has officially spoken out against Activision Blizzard Entertainment being acquired by Microsoft\u00a0due to fears that it will become the only option available to gamers within cloud gaming services for years to come.<\/p>\n<h2>The CMA does not want an Xbox monopoly in the cloud<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-198060 size-full entered lazyloaded\" title=\"Xbox Gamepass in the cloud could be the reason for the purchase not going through\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/350_techweek.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-198060\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Xbox Gamepass in the cloud could be the reason for the purchase not going through<\/p>\n<p>While in the past months everyone has focused on the concept of monopoly within the spectrum of video games for consoles, with Sony expressing its concern about the future exclusivity of franchises like Call of Duty, finally the CMA has changed its angle expressing the need\u00a0to greater freedom in the cloud services market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCloud gaming needs a free and competitive market to drive innovation and choice.\u00a0Microsoft already enjoys a powerful position and advantage over other competitors in cloud gaming and this deal would strengthen that advantage by giving it the ability to undercut new and innovative competitors,\u201d said Martin Coleman, chair of the CMA panel.<\/p>\n<p>According to this organization, Microsoft currently\u00a0already has notable leadership in the cloud gaming services market with a presence of between 60% and 70% globally, so\u00a0adding exclusive proposals such as Call of Duty to its Xbox Game Pass platform would make it impossible for future companies to gain a place in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>How is the process going?\u00a0Microsoft and Activision Blizzard have already confirmed that they will appeal the CMA&#8217;s decision to the UK Competition Appeals Tribunal\u00a0and for now there is no change in the intention of the two companies to go ahead with the acquisition.\u00a0Meanwhile, other organizations in different parts of the world will mark their position in the coming weeks\/months.<\/p>\n<p>It is worth noting that it is mentioned that getting a change in the CMA decision could take up to a couple of years, something that would significantly complicate Xbox&#8217;s current plans.\u00a0At the same time,\u00a0the United Kingdom market is the most important within Europe and one of the main ones globally\u00a0(even more so for the brand as it has almost no presence in Asia), so this refusal is a very hard blow for Microsoft.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several headaches are taking Microsoft Xbox since the\u00a0announcement of the purchase of Activision\u00a0for no less than 69 billion dollars in January of last year.\u00a0Following its court fights with Playstation, the first setback comes from the\u00a0UK&#8217;s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)\u00a0announcing against the deal\u00a0.
