{"id":158391,"date":"2023-03-11T21:41:18","date_gmt":"2023-03-11T21:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.techweekmag.com\/?p=158391"},"modified":"2023-10-18T06:09:30","modified_gmt":"2023-10-18T05:09:30","slug":"sonos-plans-to-get-rid-of-the-hdmi-cable-to-connect-its-soundbars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/speakers\/sonos-plans-to-get-rid-of-the-hdmi-cable-to-connect-its-soundbars\/","title":{"rendered":"Sonos plans to get rid of the HDMI cable to connect its soundbars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sonos CEO Patrick\u00a0<b>Spence<\/b>\u00a0said he&#8217;s been pushing his team for a long time to get rid of the HDMI cable when connecting their soundbars, replacing it with a wireless link.<\/p>\n<p><b>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/news\/speakers\/sonos-era-100-and-300-speakers-coming-this-spring\/\">Sonos\u00a0Era 300<\/a><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/news\/speakers\/sonos-era-100-and-300-speakers-coming-this-spring\/\">\u00a0<\/a>wireless speakers\u00a0\u00a0are capable of operating as rear speakers with Sonos Arc or Beam soundbars, but not as a TV speaker replacement, which would require Sonos to add an HDMI module to the Sonos Era 300 or support some kind of wireless connection between the TV and wireless audio systems .<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/155_techweek.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is something that Amazon, Apple and Roku have already implemented with their Echo, HomePod and Roku TV models.\u00a0The HomePod can connect via Wi-Fi to an Apple TV 4K, while the Echo and Roku TV speakers can work via Wi-Fi with compatible Amazon Fire TVs or Roku TVs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/156_techweek.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wireless support will allow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonos.com\">Sonos<\/a> speakers, such as a pair of Era 300s, to be connected directly to a compatible media player or TV, although he noted that not many users use wireless speakers in this way yet.\u00a0<i>&#8220;We haven&#8217;t seen many people actually use\u00a0<\/i><i>HomePod\u00a0<\/i><i>in this way<\/i>\u00a0,&#8221; added Patrick Spence.\u00a0<i>&#8220;Most people still choose the soundbar&#8221;<\/i>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/157_techweek.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These comments confirm the rumor that Sonos has an internal\u00a0<i>&#8220;Home Theater OS&#8221;<\/i>\u00a0project that links to apps directly on the smart TV.\u00a0The big question, of course, is how Sonos will be able to bring its technology into other brands&#8217; TVs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sonos CEO Patrick\u00a0Spence\u00a0said he&#8217;s been pushing his team for a long time to get rid of the HDMI cable when connecting their soundbars, replacing it with a wireless link.
