For the most part, hopes for even newer technology were justified. Here are the key differences between the 2022 and 2023 Samsung S95. There are two main points to note here.

The Samsung S95C is the most premium of the two Samsung QD-OLED lineups for 2023, while the S95B was Samsung’s only QD-OLED lineup for 2022. Looking at these points in detail, the S95C will stand above the new S90C line, which will also be from the QD-OLED category.

The S95C series earns extra points mainly due to its ultra-slim design. This design was made possible by the placement of its connections in the One Connect outdoor unit, as well as a more powerful sound system. So far, Samsung hasn’t specifically announced whether the cheaper S90C line will have the same picture quality as the S95C.

So far, there is no doubt that the S95C will become a full-fledged second-generation QD-OLED. Another important difference is the fact that the Samsung S95B consisted of only two models with 65-inch and 55-inch screen sizes. In the S95C series from Samsung, the Samsung QE77S95C 77-inch model has been added to the Samsung QE55S95C and Samsung QE65S95C TVs.

In terms of price, Samsung has yet to confirm the price of the S95C. Models will probably cost $300-600 more. Judging by the facts of 2022, it’s worth adding that Samsung will likely still aim to position the new S95C as a cheaper model than flagship Mini-LED 4K TVs.

Image quality

A side-by-side comparison shows that the S95C delivers many image enhancements over its groundbreaking predecessor. The most noticeable improvement on the 2023 model is brightness. When the S95B and S95C TVs are placed side by side, the S95C’s images look significantly brighter when viewing high dynamic range (HDR) content.

In this case, we are talking about both small peaks of brightness, and full-screen bright pictures. The new screens have recorded brightness readings of up to 1500 nits in 10% screen window and over 2000 nits in 2% white HDR windows. In other words, S95C is 20-30% brighter than S95B. This is enough to provide a fairly tangible effect when viewing HDR.

The most obvious new benefit of this latest processor is that it changes the way objects are identified and displayed in an image. It also creates an increased sense of depth in images, more in line with how the eyes see the real world.

In addition, Samsung has reintroduced its long-abandoned processing option for converting Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) sources to HDR. The extra brightness contributes to a noticeable improvement in color volume. The longer you look at images of the S95C and S95B, the more color improvements you can see in the new model.

The extra brightness opens up a wider range of tones. There is also a noticeable step forward in the coherence, balance and richness of the S95C saturation. It helps bright, colorful images look like never before. All of this reflects the benefits of being able to produce vibrant colors without the need for any white subpixels.

Colors on the S95C aren’t just more vibrant than on the S95B. They are also more refined. In particular, skin tones look more realistic than on the 2022 models. As a reminder, the EU introduces extreme power consumption restrictions for TVs in 2023. QD-OLED manufacturer Samsung Display has managed to achieve a significant reduction in power consumption in the S95C series models.

This allows you to provide additional brightness without increasing power. The S95C also got better at handling dark scenes. Black levels remain just as high when viewed in a dark room. But the new screen captures subtle details better in dark corners and outperforms its predecessor in preventing black levels from being reduced by light in a brightly lit room.

In this regard, the S95C still doesn’t seem perfect. The improvements appear to be just changes to the screen’s anti-glare coating, rather than more fundamental innovations. However, there are improvements and they are visible to the naked eye. While the S95C has a higher tendency than the S95B to lose fine detail in very bright colors and light peaks in some picture presets.

Movie and Filmmaker modes will track the mastering of HDR content. The factory settings of these modes have become more accurate. The S95C will continue to deliver the wide viewing angles and unrivaled local contrast benefits of all self-emitting displays, where each pixel can create its own light rather than sharing ambient illumination with thousands of neighboring pixels.

Sound quality

With the S95C series, Samsung has improved the performance of its Object Tracking Sound (OTS) feature, creating a more dynamic, layered and powerful multi-channel soundstage that handles OTS even better by placing certain effects exactly at the right place on the screen. The insanely thin design of the new model still limits the amount of bass a TV can produce without distortion.

Design

The incredible thinness of much of the S95B’s profile instantly made it look like a next generation screen. However, the S95C takes that subtlety even further with an external One Connect box for image processing and connections.

This outer box can be placed away from the S95C’s screen with a single thinly colored cable providing power to the screen as well as picture and sound information. There is no longer a need to increase the screen size due to switching and processors on board. On the other hand, you still need to cram speakers into this tiny chassis.

These speakers can get help thanks to Samsung’s Q-Symphony technology. This allows the speakers of Samsung’s latest soundbars to join forces with the TV’s speakers, creating a large and remarkably well-balanced soundstage.

Game Mode

Other key new features of the S95C that haven’t been covered in the picture and sound sections so far include a few handy tricks for gamers. For example, a new kind of Super Ultrawide Game for PC games that support extremely wide aspect ratios and Mini’s zoom capability.

Virtual aiming point and improved dual screen support, where game and video sources can be played simultaneously on a split screen without impacting legendary low input lag.

Samsung has improved the presentation of the updated Tizen-based smart system it introduced in 2022, and has also made it easier to connect external smart devices to the TV for monitoring or, in some cases, control through the TV screen.

Samsung S95B vs S95C. What’s better?

Concerns that Samsung’s new QD-OLED technology may have peaked at launch with the 2022 S95B have been decisively dispelled by the launch of Samsung’s new S95C series. It should also be noted that there are no final samples of the S95C yet for a full review of this TV.

However, when compared visually, it is already enough to be sure that the S95C moves the QD-OLED dial forward significantly. With its promotion, it puts even more pressure on both traditional OLEDs and Mini LEDs. On the other hand, when it comes to price, the S95B is still a bargain, especially compared to the Sony A95K .

So when the S95C goes on sale, you can buy a 2022 55-inch or 65-inch model instead of the S95C. But if you need a QD-OLED model with a diagonal of 77 inches, then the result of the choice will be only the Samsung QE77S95C model from the new series.

The 2023 Samsung S95C is the successor to last year’s S95B. Both TVs belong to the QD-OLED
