{"id":142071,"date":"2022-02-23T07:36:48","date_gmt":"2022-02-23T07:36:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.techweekmag.com\/?p=142071"},"modified":"2024-02-20T15:33:23","modified_gmt":"2024-02-20T15:33:23","slug":"hacker-steals-1-7-million-in-nfts-from-opensea-users","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/technology\/hacker-steals-1-7-million-in-nfts-from-opensea-users\/","title":{"rendered":"Hacker steals $1.7 million in NFTs from OpenSea users"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NFTS, some love them while others hate them, but what is certain is that they move astronomical figures of money, and where there is a lot of money there are surely friends of others.\u00a0This is how the NFT community has become the target of a\u00a0<strong>hack that has stripped several people of their precious<\/strong>\u00a0non-fungible digital tokens;\u00a0which together are &#8220;listed&#8221; for a value equivalent to 1.5 million euros.<\/p>\n<p>This story originates from\u00a0<strong>OpenSea,<\/strong>\u00a0the largest online marketplace for trading NFTs, when the site&#8217;s co-founder, Devin Finzer, reported that\u00a0<strong>17 users<\/strong>\u00a0of the platform have been the victims of a\u00a0\u00a0<strong>phishing<\/strong>\u00a0attack this Sunday, February 20. 2022. As a result, users have lost possession of their NFTs to the cyber criminal(s) behind the attack.<\/p>\n<h2>OpenSea Denies Responsibility for Phishing Attack and Lost NFTs<\/h2>\n<p>Being an attack by means of Phishing, it is difficult to point the finger at OpenSea.\u00a0In this sense, the company defends that\u00a0<strong>the attack was perpetrated outside of OpenSea<\/strong>\u00a0and the site is ruled out as a vector for the attack.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We are actively working with users whose items were stolen to narrow down a set of common websites they interacted with that could have been responsible for the malicious signatures,&#8221; Finzer said on Sunday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the company&#8217;s technology director, Nadav Hollander;\u00a0ruled out the possibility that the attack had something to do with or took advantage of the migration process to a new contract system that is currently running through OpenSea&#8217;s platform.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyloaded aligncenter wp-image-181685 size-full\" title=\"OpenSea Denies Responsibility for Phishing Attack and Lost NFTs\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/120_techweek.jpg\" alt=\"OpenSea Denies Responsibility for Phishing Attack and Lost NFTs\" width=\"1054\" height=\"560\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In short, this incident that occurred on Saturday February 19 is not the responsibility of OpenSea.\u00a0In addition, Finzer indicated that the evidence points to this being\u00a0<strong>\u201ca targeted attack rather than a systematic problem.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, despite the fact that the attacks have been committed outside the platform;\u00a0OpenSea is currently &#8220;actively assisting affected users and discussing ways to provide additional assistance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1) We\u2019ve narrowed down the list of impacted individuals to 17, rather than the previously mentioned 32.
