{"id":132532,"date":"2023-02-26T06:03:35","date_gmt":"2023-02-26T06:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.techweekmag.com\/?p=132532"},"modified":"2024-06-04T17:34:29","modified_gmt":"2024-06-04T17:34:29","slug":"olympus-pen-e-p7-review-4k-camera-in-a-classic-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/photo\/olympus-pen-e-p7-review-4k-camera-in-a-classic-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympus PEN E-P7: 4K camera in a classic design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OM Digital Solutions has announced the new Olympus PEN E-P7 mirrorless camera.\u00a0The EP series hasn&#8217;t had any replenishment since 2013, when the E-P5 was released.\u00a0The new camera continues the tradition of its predecessors, combining a stylish compact form factor with high-end imaging features.<\/p>\n<p>The PEN E-P7 has a 5-axis in-body image stabilization system.\u00a0The E-P7&#8217;s image sensor is a 20-megapixel Live MOS Micro Four Thirds chip.\u00a0In the proposed review of the Olympus PEN E-P7, we will get acquainted with the functionality and features of the new product.<\/p>\n<h2>Olympus PEN E-P7 review<\/h2>\n<h3>Design<\/h3>\n<p>Looking at the front of the Olympus PEN E-P7, it is easy to spot similarities with previous PEN cameras.\u00a0The PEN E-P7 is slightly larger than its\u00a0E-PL10 sibling\u00a0and slightly smaller than the PEN-F, but lighter than both.\u00a0The PEN E-P7 dodges the more modern look of the E-PL series and two-tone pen in favor of a vintage design and textured leatherette finish.<\/p>\n<p>The PEN E-P7 now features a dual-wheel control concept that expands manual control capabilities.\u00a0There is also a profile control dial on the front panel.\u00a0This allows the user to switch between standard, color and monochrome photo modes and filter effects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/01-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-dizajn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9241\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/01-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-dizajn-700x191.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/01-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-dizajn-700x191.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/01-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-dizajn-300x82.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/01-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-dizajn-768x210.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/01-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-dizajn-1536x420.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/01-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-dizajn.jpg 1920w\" alt=\"Olympus PEN E-P7 - design \" width=\"700\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the top of the Olympus E-P7 are the command dials, one of which rotates at the front and the other at the back of the camera.\u00a0Both are made of aluminum.\u00a0There are also shutter and video recording buttons on the top of the camera, a share button, a power switch, a hot shoe, and an area where a pop-up flash pops up.<\/p>\n<p>The rear panel of the E-P7 is mainly occupied by a tilting display.\u00a0The 3-inch touchscreen has approximately 1,037k dots.\u00a0The display tilts 80 \u00b0 up and 180 degrees down for use as a selfie screen.\u00a0To the right of the display is a small thumb rest with many buttons including AEF \/ AEL, menu, info, play and delete buttons, and a navigation pad with four function buttons.<\/p>\n<h3>Image sensor and shooting features<\/h3>\n<p>The E-P7 has a 20-megapixel Live MOS image sensor.\u00a0Like other Micro Four Thirds image sensors, this sensor has an aspect ratio of 4: 3 (hence the system&#8217;s name).\u00a0The sensor size is 17.4 mm x 13 mm.\u00a0The sensor is paired with the TruePic VIII image processor.<\/p>\n<p>The Olympus E-P7 has a native ISO range of 200\u2026 25600, which can be extended to ISO 100. When using Auto ISO, the range is 100\u2026 6400. Exposure compensation is available in +\/- 5 EV.\u00a0Metering is carried out by the Digital ESP system, which uses 324 zones.\u00a0Metering modes include multi, center-weighted, spot and spot with light \/ shadow control.<\/p>\n<p>The Olympus PEN E-P7 is equipped with a mechanical shutter with a shutter speed of 60 to 1 \/ 4000s, as well as a manual mode.\u00a0An electronic shutter with shutter speeds of 60 to 1 \/ 16,000 s is also available.\u00a0The PEN E-P7 offers many special shooting modes and functions.\u00a0There are many different story modes.\u00a0The E-P7 also features an Advanced Photo mode.<\/p>\n<p>To help beginners, the PEN E-P7 has a Live Guide function that introduces the user to various photographic scenarios and ways to achieve a particular look.\u00a0Including how to get images with more saturation and how to blur the background.\u00a0Other photographers will be happy to know that all of the standard P, A, S, and M shooting modes are located on the mode dial.<\/p>\n<h3>Focus and performance<\/h3>\n<p>The Olympus PEN E-P7 features the same new autofocus system as the\u00a0E-M10 IV\u00a0.\u00a0It&#8217;s the same contrast-based autofocus system.\u00a0But it is better than the PEN-F or any of the previous E-PL cameras.\u00a0Of course, this is not as supernatural as the phase system in the Olympus OM-D\u00a0E-M5 III\u00a0and Olympus OM-D\u00a0E-M1 III\u00a0, but face and eye detection is very reliable in both stills and movies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/02-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-obzor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9242\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/02-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-obzor-700x614.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/02-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-obzor-700x614.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/02-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-obzor-300x263.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/02-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-obzor-768x674.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/02-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-obzor-1536x1347.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/02-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-obzor.jpg 1920w\" alt=\"Olympus PEN E-P7 - overview\" width=\"700\" height=\"614\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The improved autofocus is especially noticeable when recording video.\u00a0The E-P7 is an excellent 4K 30p camera that captures crisp footage with absolutely flawless stabilization even without a gimbal.\u00a0The lack of a microphone jack, though, means you&#8217;ll have to rely on standalone microphones (or built into the camera).<\/p>\n<p>The Olympus E-P7 will never be a sports camera.\u00a0Still, the burst speed is impressive.\u00a0The mechanical shutter is rated at 8.7 fps, while with the electric shutter you can get up to 15 fps.\u00a0The camera&#8217;s stated RAW buffer depth is 42 frames, or 49 JPEG images at this speed.\u00a0AF holds very well depending on the subject, but don&#8217;t expect to use it for birdwatching.<\/p>\n<p>Dynamic range is a measure of a camera&#8217;s ability to record extreme brightness values \u200b\u200bwhile retaining detail in the brightest and darkest parts of a scene.\u00a0The latest Olympus cameras have traditionally high dynamic range and the E-P7 is no exception.\u00a0The Fujifilm X-S10 is still the benchmark in this sector at higher ISOs, but the PEN is ahead of the competition from Canon and Sony.<\/p>\n<h3>4K video recording<\/h3>\n<p>As noted above, the PEN E-P7 supports 4K.\u00a0It can record stabilized 4K video at up to 30fps (24p and 25p frame rates are also available).\u00a0Video is recorded at 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD) in MOV format with H.264 codec.\u00a0When recording 4K video, the maximum bit rate is approximately 102 Mbps.<\/p>\n<p>It is unknown if 4K video is recorded using the full width of the image sensor or if there is some kind of crop to stabilize.\u00a0Full HD (1920 x 1080) video is also available at frame rates up to 60p.\u00a0You can record 720p video at up to 120 fps in high speed video mode for later slow motion playback.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/03-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-kommutacija.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9243\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/03-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-kommutacija-700x364.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/03-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-kommutacija-700x364.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/03-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-kommutacija-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/03-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-kommutacija-768x399.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/03-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-kommutacija-1536x798.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/03-stereoindex.com\/tech-olypmus-pen-e-p7-kommutacija.jpg 1609w\" alt=\"Olympus PEN E-P7 - connections\" width=\"700\" height=\"364\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Connections and power<\/h3>\n<p>The PEN E-P7 includes several different ports such as USB micro-B and Micro HDMI (type D).\u00a0The camera&#8217;s USB interface is version 2.0.\u00a0The camera also has wireless connectivity via built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which can connect to the OI.Share app on iOS and Android.<\/p>\n<p>The E-P7 uses a BLS-50 lithium-ion battery that can hold up to 360 photos or 80 minutes of video.\u00a0By the way, the maximum recording time for one movie is about 29 minutes.\u00a0The E-P7 can be charged via USB when the camera is turned off.\u00a0UHS-II compatible SD \/ SDHC \/ SDXC memory cards are being used.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E-P7 price<\/strong><br \/>\nAt the moment (June 2021) the Olympus E-P7 is available for pre-order in foreign online stores at a price of 800 euros per body.\u00a0Complete with the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ lens, the price will be approximately 900 euros.\u00a0Two body colors are available &#8211; white-silver and black-silver.\u00a0Sales are expected to begin in the last days of June 2021.<\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>Many have hoped to see the PEN-F Mark II, and may be disappointed that this is the wrong camera.\u00a0But in reality, the Olympus PEN E-P7 combines the style and shooting modes of the PEN-F with the tiny form factor of E-PL bodies and the new E-M10 Mark IV technologies.<\/p>\n<p>This camera combines the PEN line with the power of OM-D bodies.\u00a0Those.\u00a0This is a great pocket camera for travel and walking.\u00a0Plus, the E-P7 is an excellent creative tool thanks to the monochrome and color modes offered by the Profile Dial.\u00a0All in all, good start for OM Digital Solutions &#8211; the new owner of Olympus.<\/p>\n<p>[ratemypost]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OM Digital Solutions has announced the new Olympus PEN E-P7 mirrorless camera.\u00a0The EP series hasn&#8217;t had any replenishment since 2013, when the E-P5 was released.\u00a0The new camera continues the tradition of its predecessors, combining a stylish compact form factor with high-end imaging features.
