Kern Layla AION : On the verge of fantasy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The review is unlikely to be completely objective, since I am a fierce fan of Astell &amp; Kern, Jerry Harvey Audio and Harvey himself (very cool guy, check out the biography at your leisure).\u00a0And\u00a0\u00a0I was waiting for the\u00a0new\u00a0\u00a0<em>Layla<\/em>\u00a0from the first day of her announcement, but I tried to evaluate as impartially as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Packaging and equipment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leila&#8217;s clothes make a positive first impression: there is no unnecessary tinsel with gilding, everything is stylish and concise.\u00a0A cardboard casing with a print of the model, technical characteristics and a set posing for Jerry on the back side of a set that has already become a familiar design of Astells and Jerry Harvey Audio collaboration products.<\/p>\n<p>Under the cardboard protection, there is a dense solid box, inside which the accessories are located.\u00a0Headphones are expected in a chic Kevlar case, obviously, for greater safety, they were not taken outside of it, unlike younger models, for example\u00a0\u00a0<em>Rosie<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a0<em>Diana<\/em>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>The set of accessories is as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8211; 3 pairs of silicone ear pads<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; 3 pairs of foams<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; screwdriver for bass adjustment<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; eyelet brush for cleaning<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; a carbon case with magnets (which itself is worth a good headphone)<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; metal card with serial number<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; and an adapter from a balanced 2.5 mm to a 3.5 mm jack<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-86.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-131484\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-86.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-86.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-86-711x377.jpg 711w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-86-800x425.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-86-770x409.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-86-260x138.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-86-737x391.jpg 737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The package bundle is complete and, by and large, the only thing missing is a replaceable cable, which I would like to see as an accessory for monitors of this level.\u00a0The adapter is not inferior in quality to the cable, but the replaceable one is still clamped.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, the wire with the dreadful name &#8220;OFC 4N&#8221; is 8-core, silver-plated and in rigid insulation;\u00a0reliable connection is provided by 7-pin iridium connectors, specially designed for the new\u00a0\u00a0<em>Layla<\/em>\u00a0, this is not any MMSH for you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Design and ergonomics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The exterior of the\u00a0\u00a0<em>Astell &amp; Kern Layla AION\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0evokes a strong association with jewels and something technological, thanks to the brushed carbon cases.\u00a0Ruby-colored inserts stylized under the company&#8217;s logo, coupled with iridescent, elusive patterns of the cases, leave an indelible impression.\u00a0I don\u2019t want to let go of the monitors without even starting to listen.<\/p>\n<p>Ergonomically, these are the best\u00a0<em>Astell<\/em>\u00a0monitors\u00a0\u00a0.\u00a0I expected a repetition of the experience of the first\u00a0\u00a0<em>Layla<\/em>\u00a0, or even something similar to\u00a0\u00a0<em>Campfire Audio Solaris<\/em>\u00a0, famous for their specific fit, but Koreans learn from their mistakes and notice others, and therefore the new version sits like a glove in almost any ears (with the exception of very tiny shells).<\/p>\n<p>The headphone case is very light, despite its size and impressive filling, again, thanks to carbon, which is much lighter than metal options and even dense plastic.\u00a0What can we say about the reliability of such a solution, because carbon surpasses even steel in its strength, remaining light enough so that the headphones are not felt during use for several hours.<\/p>\n<p>Noise isolation at a high level &#8211; still falls short of custom solutions, but due to the optimal fit and the correct body shape, it is higher than most in-duct solutions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-87.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-131485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-87.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-87.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-87-711x377.jpg 711w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-87-800x425.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-87-770x409.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-87-260x138.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-87-737x391.jpg 737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sound<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sound of\u00a0\u00a0<em>Astell &amp; Kern Layla AION is\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0unmatched, this is by far the most detailed and rich headphones I&#8217;ve heard.\u00a0To an untrained listener, such a number of details may even seem superfluous, but as soon as the ears get used to the stream of new sounds, it will not be possible to come off.<\/p>\n<p>Like all high-end monitors,\u00a0\u00a0<em>Layla<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0plays smoothly, while remaining musical.\u00a012 reinforcing emitters in each earphone are divided into 3 channels and reproduce the music the way the performer wanted it to convey to you, with all the subtleties and features of each individual track.\u00a0One of the markers of really high-quality headphones is the ability to hear details at a low volume level, which\u00a0<em>Leila is<\/em>\u00a0not lacking\u00a0\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>The model is omnivorous,\u00a0<em>Layla AION has\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0no\u00a0genre preferences\u00a0\u00a0, just serve the maximum quality of the source you can reach, and you will be immersed in a juicy, rumbling and peak informative sound.<\/p>\n<p>During testing, I ran through the monitors all the music that I could only, from light jazz and instrumental, to rich symphonic and doom metal, but the most pleasant impressions were left by:\u00a0\u00a0<em>Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queen, The Black Keys, Brahms, Hans Zimmer, Cage the Elephant<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0(especially the latest \u201c\u00a0<em>Social Cues<\/em>\u00a0\u201d &#8211; a very high quality record),\u00a0\u00a0<em>Liam Gallagher, Foals, The Strokes<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0and of course my favorites\u00a0\u00a0<em>Queens of the Stone Age<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0(\u201c\u00a0<em>Era Vulgaris<\/em>\u00a0\u201d in the first place).\u00a0When listening, I recommend starting with one of these performers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-88.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-131486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-88.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-88.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-88-711x377.jpg 711w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-88-800x425.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-88-770x409.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-88-260x138.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-88-737x391.jpg 737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I will clarify right away that these headphones do not tolerate bad recording, or low bit rate, or, especially, a cheap source, relative to\u00a0<em>Leila&#8217;s<\/em>\u00a0level\u00a0\u00a0<em>, of\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0course.<\/p>\n<p>The monitors were tested with the following players:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<em>Astell &amp; Kern A &amp; ultima SP1000M<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<em>Astell &amp; Kern KANN<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<em>Astell &amp; Kern A &amp; norma SR15<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<em>IBasso DX220<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<em>FiiO the M11<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<em>FiiO X3II<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And if\u00a0<em>\u00a0FiiO X3 was\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0used as an experiment, and\u00a0\u00a0<em>FiiO M11\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0for its purity, then\u00a0I did not expect such deplorable results\u00a0from\u00a0\u00a0<em>DX220\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0and, moreover,\u00a0\u00a0<em>Astell &amp; Kern SR15\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><em>KANN\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0did a little better, but still he was very far from ideal.<\/p>\n<p><em>Astell &amp; Kern Layla AION\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0require the\u00a0\u00a0<strong>highest<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0quality source and a cheap player will ruin their sound (yes, now $ 1000 players can be considered not expensive enough, a very harsh reality from\u00a0\u00a0<em>A&amp;K<\/em>\u00a0).<\/p>\n<p>When listening with all of these players,\u00a0\u00a0<strong>except for\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Astell &amp; Kern SP1000M<\/em>\u00a0, 12 valves\u00a0\u00a0<em>Leila<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0worked correctly, sometimes giving out too much high, pesocha on vocals, cutting ears cymbals and the violin or overdoing with bass guitar clogging.\u00a0On heavy compositions replete with attacks from the same\u00a0\u00a0<em>System of a Down<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a0<em>Three Days Grace, the\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0sound turned into a mess, without the ability to clearly hear individual parts, which is not at all expected when listening to such headphones.\u00a0Obviously, players of the middle and high segment cannot cope with a total of 24 emitters, which require a special approach.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-89.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-131487\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-89.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-89.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-89-711x377.jpg 711w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-89-800x425.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-89-770x409.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-89-260x138.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.stereoindex.com\/tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Pasted-89-737x391.jpg 737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>Summing up, I would like to draw parallels with three models of monitors (more can be, but then the review will drag on even more), namely:<\/p>\n<p>Campfire Audio Solaris &#8211; play dry in all respects, including detail, saturation, ergonomics and even\u00a0<em>packaging<\/em>\u00a0, with all due respect to\u00a0\u00a0<em>Kempfires<\/em>\u00a0.\u00a0This is not surprising, but\u00a0\u00a0<em>Solaris<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0is still a top solution from\u00a0\u00a0<em>Campfire Audio<\/em>\u00a0, which are fighting with\u00a0\u00a0<em>Astell &amp; Kern<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0for the wallets of the wealthiest buyers, so the comparison seems logical.<\/p>\n<p>Astell &amp; Kern Layla (discontinued) &#8211; very subjective, since there was no way to compare alternately, but the first generation loses, primarily due to the less detailing of the top and sub-bass, as well as a completely stupid fit, which suits the units.<\/p>\n<p>Ambient Acoustics MAD16 &#8211; 16-driver armature professional custom monitors are matched as closely as possible in sound quality to the new\u00a0\u00a0<em>Layla<\/em>\u00a0, thanks to fine tuning and 4 additional drivers.<\/p>\n<p>And in conclusion, I will say that the owner of\u00a0\u00a0<em>Layla AION\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0can only envy, since this person will be able to carry with him some of the most reference in-ear monitors in the world, provided that he can provide\u00a0\u00a0<em>Layla with a<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0source of a sufficiently high class.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The review is unlikely to be completely objective, since I am a fierce fan of Astell &amp;
