Czech speaker manufacturer Xavian has launched the Medea, a two-way speaker with a bass reflex housing. Xavian has developed an optional tripod for the Medea that can be filled with ten kilograms of sand if desired.
Many loudspeaker manufacturers buy their drivers, i.e. tweeters, midranges and woofers, from specialist manufacturers who are dedicated to making drivers. Driver manufacturers do not usually build speakers themselves but supply their drivers to sometimes dozens of different loudspeaker manufacturers. Danish manufacturer ScanSpeak has been building drivers for decades that are used by many loudspeaker manufacturers. Xavian ‘s Medea features ScanSpeak’s latest generation of drivers, the ScanSpeak Ellipticor. According to Xavian, the Medea delivers unparalleled integrity, clarity and musicality, with the ability to play music with extraordinary fidelity and emotion.
Together with the Medea, an equally unique stand was created to complement the speaker’s confident aesthetics. The manufacturer claims to have opted for slightly eccentric proportions and style, and the new stand is the product of an extremely labor-intensive production process, not only to ensure completely optimal working conditions, but also to underline the uniqueness of the speaker and the stand. The stand can optionally be filled with ten kilograms of sand.
The Medea’s cabinet is made of MDF and hand-veneered. A complex bracing system is built into the interior and the walls are lined with bitumen on the inside. The ScanSpeak Elipticor woofer has a diameter of 222 millimeters and is equipped with an elliptical voice coil, a vented magnetic system and a special paper membrane, resulting in very low distortion and a wide bandwidth. The tweeter has a diameter of 120 millimeters and is also a member of the ScanSpeak Elipticor series. The FaseZero crossover consists of only three components and capacitors have been omitted. The tweeter is placed in a sealed compartment to avoid influence from the woofer.
Xavian lists a frequency response of 39 Hz to 20 kHz at -3 dB level. The crossover is at 1.75 kHz, the nominal impedance is 87 dB and the specified sensitivity is 87 dB (2.83 Volts / 1 meter). The dimensions of the Medea are 540 x 260 x 525 millimeters (H x W x D) and it weighs 27.7 kilograms. The dimensions of the tripod are 570 x 340 x 510 millimeters (H x W x D) and the tripod weighs 15.6 kilograms, without filling.
Magnetically attachable cover plates are not supplied as standard, but are available as an option.
