DALI Spektor 2: Affordable yet impressive bookshelf speakers

The DALI Spektor 2 speakers are a bigger version of the earlier model, offering a wider low-frequency range and the capability to deliver higher sound pressure levels.

High-quality equipment is rarely inexpensive, which is a well-known fact. However, it doesn’t necessarily have to come with a hefty price tag. DALI, a prominent Danish acoustics brand, has introduced an affordable new line called Spektor. This series will feature four models: two bookshelf speakers, one floor-standing speaker, and a central channel speaker.

The Spektor series represents DALI’s venture into a new market segment. Developing high-quality audio systems at such a low price point for this brand required considerable effort. The company optimized every stage of the production process, and the assembled prototypes underwent extensive and rigorous audio testing, including both technical evaluations and live listening sessions.

All speakers in the line feature proprietary DALI drivers designed in-house. The use of wood fibers in the diffuser not only sets DALI speakers apart but also showcases advanced technology. The fine-grained paper is reinforced with larger cellulose fibers, resulting in a tougher and uneven membrane that effectively minimizes unwanted surface resonances. This combination of diffusers, a robust magnetic system, and low-loss suspensions enables the drivers to accurately reproduce even the most subtle details of the sound stage.

Each model in the Spektor line is equipped with a unique LF driver, specifically engineered for its design. Every aspect was meticulously considered, from the angle of the diffuser cone to the positioning of the dust caps. This attention to detail has led to the creation of a groundbreaking series of Hi-Fi audio systems. Typically, equipment of this caliber comes at a significantly higher price or offers much less impressive specifications for a similar cost.

The DALI Spektor 2 speakers are a larger iteration of the previous model, featuring an extended low-frequency range and the ability to produce higher sound pressure levels. These speakers are an ideal choice for a stereo setup in a medium-sized room where floor-standing speakers may not be suitable, yet a dynamic and rich sound is desired.

The speakers feature fiberboard enclosures with a premium vinyl finish that closely resembles natural wood, available in black ash or walnut. In this series, DALI engineers have integrated multiple proprietary technologies, one of which is the creation of a broad directional sound field. Thanks to the design of the front panel and the speaker characteristics, a stereo image is produced that can be effectively experienced across a wide area. This is an essential attribute for home audio systems, which often cannot be optimally positioned in relation to listeners. Furthermore, the DALI Spektor 2 speakers, like others in the series, are highly compatible with various amplifiers, requiring minimal input power to achieve nominal sound pressure levels. Their stable impedance, despite a relatively low sensitivity, makes them an excellent match for even entry-level stereo amplifiers or AV receivers.

The DALI Spektor 2 speaker features a lightweight fabric dome tweeter, nearly twice as light as those found in competing models. This design choice allows for an extended frequency range and minimizes audible distortion, even at higher volumes. The tweeter is mounted on a base that not only absorbs unwanted vibrations but also acts as a sound guide, enhancing its directivity and overall efficiency. Additionally, the bass driver boasts a 5.25-inch diaphragm made from a blend of wood and paper pulp, paired with a phase inverter located on the rear panel, directly opposite the woofer. This configuration optimizes sound flow while keeping noise levels to a minimum.
