Electrocompaniet EC 5: A Pure Class A Preamplifier

Norwegian company Electrocompaniet has introduced the EC 5 preamplifier, which will officially launch at the High End audio fair in Munich next week. This release represents the culmination of over a decade of development. The EC 5 features a blend of refined analog clarity, advanced technology, and a modern interpretation of classic design. While detailed photos and technical specifications are currently limited, we are eager to share the information we have with our audience.

The EC 5 preamplifier operates in a pure Class A configuration and incorporates a fully discrete dual-mono design. Each channel is powered by its own independent supply, utilizing 80 VA toroidal transformers and a storage capacity of 15,000 ?F per channel. This expansive power supply setup is engineered to uphold performance across various loads, which significantly contributes to the EC 5’s remarkably low distortion and broad frequency response.

Utilizing Electrocompaniet’s AmpliWire topology, the EC 5 features high bandwidth and high slew rate, employing fully discrete components without capacitors in the signal path. The circuit design minimizes negative feedback, making it adept at handling long cable runs and low-impedance loads effortlessly. Additionally, it includes protective measures such as internal temperature monitoring and DC fault protection at the output.

At the heart of the EC 5’s architecture lies Electrocompaniet’s unique patented volume control, developed over a decade of dedicated research and innovation. The design eliminates mechanical switches and relays, utilizing parallel resistor networks managed by custom electronic switches for volume adjustment. This ensures a consistent signal path across all volume levels, maintaining integrity with over 900 steps at a 0.1 dB resolution, spanning from –100 dB to +20 dB.

In terms of connectivity, the EC 5 offers an abundance of options, featuring four XLR inputs and two RCA inputs for each channel. The output configuration includes both balanced and single-ended main outputs, along with dedicated tape outputs. Additionally, it provides three 12V trigger outputs and an IR output for seamless system integration.

While the EC 5 does not include digital connections, it is equipped with a LAN port for app control and potential firmware updates.

The front panel showcases a sizable acrylic surface equipped with a touch-sensitive volume control and a 7-inch IPS color display, embodying Electrocompaniet’s traditional design ethos while incorporating contemporary features. The EC 5 includes source labeling, level adjustment, and visual monitoring of mains voltage. Its internal design effectively isolates the analog circuitry from the power and control components, enhancing stability and performance. Those interested in viewing the EC 5 can visit the trade fair in Munich next week, specifically at the Electrocompaniet booth located in Atrium 4.2, room F225.
