The BDS 580 Blu-ray receiver is Harman/Kardon’s next step towards innovative, high-performance multimedia systems. The Harman Kardon BDS 580 is the world’s first Blu-ray receiver equipped with Dolby technology. It maintains a constant volume level no matter what entertainment you’re watching, automatically boosting quiet dialogue like moderately loud commercials.
Every detail of the glossy appearance of this receiver evokes aesthetic pleasure. The slightly concave upper metal cover organically combines with the plastic plate surrounding the sides and façade. The left side of the front panel is occupied by a slotted drive tray with a touch button for ejecting a disc, which reads almost all currently relevant formats, including Blu-ray 3D (BD-Live is supported). The centrally located display has large characters. On the right is the volume knob, combined with the power/standby switch. Its backlight also serves as a power-on indicator. At the bottom (under the tray) there is an input for the calibration microphone of the EzSet/EQ system, combined with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and a USB port compatible with Apple devices. Harman’s EzSet/EQ™ III automatic calibration process precisely adjusts the BDS 580’s volume levels, tuning and equalization to optimize sound automatically for your specific speaker system and room conditions. The controls are located on a flat programmable remote control with two backlit joystick “wheels” for settings. Control is available via an application installed on iOS or Android devices.
Five class D amplifiers allow you to develop a power of 65 W per channel (6 ohms). The model supports all major codecs, including HD audio, and can scale standard definition video up to 1080p. A convenient menu and intuitive interface make it easy to manage and configure the model. The acoustics auto-calibration system makes it easy to “make friends” of the speakers with the room.
For wireless audio streaming from mobile devices, the AirPlay function is provided, as well as a built-in Bluetooth module. The DLNA protocol is supported, according to which the Harman/Kardon BDS 580 can play audio/video/photos stored on PCs or NAS servers on the local network. When you connect to the Internet, web content becomes available. YouTube and Picasa services are supported.
Inputs (rear side of the case): 3 HDMI (2.0, with 3D support), component, 2 linear (RCA), coaxial, 2 optical, LAN interface. Outputs: one HDMI (with ARC), subwoofer output. There are 5 pairs of colored screw terminals for connecting acoustics. There is an input for an IR receiver, a trigger output (for remotely turning on an active subwoofer) and a jack for an FM antenna.
The Harman/Kardon BDS 580 receiver can work with virtually any set of speakers that match it in impedance. The device is a universal entertainment center and provides excellent sound and picture quality.
