What is NanoLED?

Does so much nomenclature end up being positive? OLED, QLED, WLED, QDOLED, MicroLED, MiniLED , LG META ( which we have already seen are spectacular this year )… And no, NanoLED is not old, you are probably confusing it with NanoCell, in case we didn’t have enough. Be that as it may, this, NanoLED is the new technology that aims to surpass OLED . Let’s see what it consists of.

What is NanoLED?

We have to start by saying, and very clearly, that for the moment this technology has not gone into production as of the date I am writing these words. Knowing this, let’s see.

The idea that swarms in the air is from Nanosys and, unlike what we are discovering from many others, this one could put OLED in danger . Why? Well, its operation is not at all similar to that of the LEDs seen so far.

It was at this CES2023 that, behind closed doors, Nanosys showed a prototype, in just six inches, of this light technology. So much so that those who have been lucky enough to discover it live have been asked not to show perfect images but to blur them. In addition, video recordings were also not allowed .

In the case of the NanoLED, it does not excite the diodes using light, it uses electrical impulses in a process that incorporates what we know as electroluminescence.

A matrix of quantum dots is excited, being able to obviate the panel of rear LED diodes necessary, with the technologies seen up to now, for the generation of blue light. Now the quantum dots themselves would be the generators of both the light and the main colors from the impulses and without intermediaries.

Nanosys is not shy about stating that these panels would have a brightness 50 times greater than OLEDs while maintaining the perfection of the blacks, also improving the wide viewing angles to which we are already accustomed; One last! At the same time , energy efficiency would improve and they could be made even thinner .

But best of all, they are very easily scalable since the size of the diodes is not involved. This, together with the above, means that they can be much cheaper even from the first moment of their launch.
