Ahead of CES 2023, TCL held a media event on December 8, 2022 to share information about the TV direction.
The time has come to publish this data. So, in 2023, TCL will offer its largest line of TVs, and in a simplified brand classification. But the flagship 8K TV models, X925 and X925 Pro, will not appear in Europe. This is a blow to the 8K market as TCL is a strong brand in this area.
The first reason for this decision is weak sales of 8K TVs, partly due to their high cost. But the main obstacle is the EU’s new energy restrictions . Whether TCL’s new 8K TVs will make it to other markets remains to be seen. But TCL will redouble its efforts in the field of 4K TV. The novelties are based on miniLED and quantum dot technologies. Game models will be the headliners of sales.
The TCL TV line itself will be reorganized into two series, S and Q, with six models each. The S-series will include the S2 (720p), S3 (1080p) and S4 (2160p) models. The S2 will come in 32″, 40″, and 43″ sizes with HDR10, while the S4 will add Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, voice control, and gaming features. All S series TVs will get Roku compatibility.
The Q series, founded back in 2014 (Q stands for quantum dots applied to a wider color gamut), will consist exclusively of 4K models equipped with the proprietary AIPQ processor. Screen sizes come in 50, 55, 65 and 75 inches and are claimed to be 66% brighter than non-QD models. TCL announced a 120Hz frame refresh for the Q series (technology from a subsidiary of CSOT). The decision on whether to choose Roku or Gogle OS for the Q series has yet to be made.
In terms of gaming features, TCL will introduce a “game accelerator” in 2023. It allows the gamer to choose between resolution and refresh rate. For example, in one mode, a gamer can experience full 4K resolution with the native 120Hz refresh rate offered by the panel. In Alternate Mode, a gamer can choose half the display’s vertical resolution but get a 240Hz refresh rate.
In addition, TCL announced its first QD-OLED TV, tentatively launching in the second half of 2023.
