The Finnish company Genelec decided to celebrate its 45th anniversary with the release of the top-end active monitor Genelec 8381A . This is a speaker system, the main purpose of which is to work in recording studios.
However, the manufacturer’s recommendations also indicate the possibility of using the novelty at home for listening to music – according to Genelec experts, the Genelec 8381A monitors are “ideal for tasks with high sound pressure levels in medium and large recording, mixing and mastering studios, as well as for the most demanding users to listen to music with high fidelity.”
To optimize the sound of the monitors for the specific acoustic conditions of the listening room, the Genelec 8381A features Smart Active Monitoring (SAM) technology and uses the Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM) software , interacting with which, the SAM system intelligently adapts the sound of the monitors to the characteristics of the room.
This provides greater flexibility to operate even in the most difficult conditions.
The point source concept of the Genelec 8381A monitors maintains accurate tonal balance and sound imaging at any listening distance, providing freedom of speaker placement and eliminating the vertical discoloration associated with large monitors.
The point source in Genelec 8381A monitors consists of a patented MDC module – four 5-inch dome mid-range drivers surround the waveguide with a tweeter. This assembly works under the control of the Genelec DSP sound processor.
The low-frequency foundation is provided by three 15-inch drivers, one of which is mounted on the front panel, and two are located on the sides of the case. The carefully designed Directivity Control Waveguide delivers clear sound and a wide directivity pattern, reducing the effects of reverberation in the listening room.
Each active monitor Genelec 8381A is equipped with amplifiers with a total power of almost 6 kW, which allows you to develop a sound pressure of 126 dB. The operating frequency range of the model extends from 20 Hz to 35 kHz. The manufacturer’s recommended price of new items is $70,000 for a pair of monitors.
