The new Apple Adaptive Audio feature is now available for AirPods Pro 2 TWS headphones . Thanks to the latest iOS 17 software update , released on September 18, 2023, the 2nd generation AirPods Pro now support this new mode. This ANC technology was first introduced at Apple WWDC 2023, and then talked about at Apple’s recent iPhone 15 event in September.
As the name suggests, Adaptive Audio is a sort of hybrid noise-canceling system that combines Transparency mode and ANC to get the best of both worlds depending on the environment. This was one of the most exciting features announced at Apple’s September 2023 event, and it’s now available for the AirPods Pro 2 wireless headphones – just update to the latest iOS 17 software.
When enabled, Adaptive Audio will “dynamically mix” both technologies based on external factors. According to Apple, the new mode “seamlessly adapts noise reduction controls as users move between locations with different levels of noise.”
Some parallels can be drawn with the adaptive audio control in the Sony WF-1000XM5 headphones and the Aware mode with ActiveSense in the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II – both dynamically adjust the level of ANC depending on the noise level in the surrounding environment.
Apple’s version doesn’t let you manually change Adaptive Audio settings or tell the system what location you’re currently in, but it’s nice to finally have an option that doesn’t just turn ANC on or off. For AirPods Pro 2 users who regularly use the noise-canceling feature, this new mode offers a greater degree of flexibility.
Another feature worth mentioning is Conversation Awareness, which automatically lowers the volume of your music when you start talking to someone while the AirPods Pro 2 are still in your ears.
The iOS 17 update also includes a Personalized Volume Mode, which uses machine learning to “learn” what volume you typically choose in certain conditions and automatically adjusts the sound according to those preferences. This can be useful for those who are in various noisy places throughout the day, eliminating the need to manually adjust the volume.
With iOS 17, you can also use updated AirPods touch controls to quickly mute or unmute any AirPods Pro, AirPods (3rd generation), or AirPods Max during a call. Simply press the handle on AirPods or the Digital Crown on AirPods Max to use the new mute feature.
